I've been kind to him this season because he's generally been strong on the ball and linked defence and midfield in a simple yet effective way, especially earlier in the season. I suppose for that reason he doesn't stand out because his game is not showy. However, as one of the most experienced players on the pitch for us against Wolves, he needed to show some authority and urgency, but it wasn't there at all. Everything was just safe and ineffectual. When you keep doing that, your teammates have to adjust so they can receive the ball, and that adjustment comes from dropping back. Then we end up with even fewer options for the forward pass. Ovie Ejaria had at least looked to try and make an impact but as the game wore on, his teammates helped to drag him down into their general mediocrity, and Wijnaldum was one of the main culprits.

Good overview. Decent footballer but even less of a leader of men than most of the rest of the squad. I'd have him in ahead of Can any time, though.
