The Derby 20-April-2016

Here was a stark picture of two teams whose seasons are threatening to head in opposite directions.

Liverpool are increasingly full of running as the days begin to lengthen.

This is another crushing result to bring them momentum ahead of their Europa League semi-final with Villarreal next week. Nobody would wish to play Jurgen Klopp’s team at the moment.

Everton, on the other hand, face an FA Cup semi-final with Manchester United this weekend on their knees, seemingly in the grip of the kind of confidence crisis that can cost managers their jobs.

Roberto Martinez’s team have lost their attacking zeal and have forgotten how to defend, presuming they ever actually knew. If the likeable Spaniard isn’t very worried about his future then he probably ought to be.

Everton were wretched here and lucky to lose only by four. If they are to win at Wembley, the improvement in their play will need to be as improbably significant as it will have to be rapid.

The most damning statistic of the night is that Liverpool had 37 shots in 97 minutes of play.

That is roughly one effort every two-and-a-half minutes and says everything about the desperate hunger of this Liverpool team but also the dreadful nature of Everton’s play.

Martinez’s team were impotent from front to back. Two of their defenders, John Stones and Ramiro Funes Mori, were awful and neither remained on the field. Stones disappeared with illness in the second half while Funes Mori was sent off just after the interval for a horrible stamp on the ankle of Liverpool’s opening scorer Divock Origi.

At the other end of the field, meanwhile, Everton were non-existent. They had three touches in the Liverpool penalty area all night.

As Anfield emptied, some regulars here was wondering aloud if there had even been a more one-sided Merseyside derby. On that theme, the mind goes back to a 5-0 dismantling of Everton by Liverpool at Goodison Park in 1982. Ian Rush scored four times that day and the great Liverpool centre forward was in his usual Anfield seat last night, his face lit up by a smile. It was hard to blame him.

These games are usually tense, churning affairs but not on this occasion. This was a night when Liverpool supporters just had to sit back and watch. It was never a contest and the only real surprise was that it took so long for the home team to score.

Up to 58 signatures now. I particularly like the reply in the comments section by Ben Martin who also started the petition. Jesus, I'm surprised he can use a PC.

Everton are a disgrace to the game, all they can do is hack, kick and moan, and they have never been any different in my eyes. That so called tackle on Origi tonight was an absolute disgrace. They hav'nt played football since the day's of Colin Harvey, and they still kicked fuck out of people then. And their so called supporters are fucking proud of it.That's it rant over,we'll done red men
