Alien

The greatest tagline to a film ever.

A work of genius.

I don't mind Aliens, but it's just so typical of Hollywood that instead of having a scary monster, they have to have hundreds.  If they could have, they'd have made Jaws 2 a film about 1,000 great white sharks invading LA.

The pitch, in a major studio office, 1985 - "Remember that film Alien made by that limey guy?  You know how scary the alien was?  Right, well imagine a similar scenario, only with a MILLION of them!  We'll get Cameron to direct."

I hate sequels.

No, never.

Also, I know Weaver is a total munter, but that final scene in the escape pod, when she's only got a t-shirt and her knickers on ? Snatchtastic.

Never thought she was a munter.  I'm sure I read years ago an interview she gave where she stated that she would love to have made a hard core porn movie.  Anyone else remember that?  Or maybe I dreamt it

Alien was a horror film, full of tension and suspense.

Aliens is an action film, full of guns and gore.

This is true.

The slow pace, character-study, tension building of Alien is untypical of Hollywood.  Aliens is very typical of Hollywood.

They are chalk and cheese, but the second one still had to ride the coat-tails of the original.  And had to add the typically-American "We love our children" sentimentality.

There are some good scenes, and as I say I don't mind it, but it's not a patch on Alien which is a classic.

Alien is the best one but i always liked Alien 3 as well. Charles Dance's acting chops added a bit of gravitas, plus the fact that they're running through corridor's with no weapons against a big fuck off Alien, it add's to the suspense. The second one doesn't have any of that because everyones got gun's and seemingly endless amounts of ammo, something about having nothing in that situation puts the shit's up you.

I always wonder what might of been had Vincent Ward's wooden world went through to production, it could of been regarded as the best Alien of them all, but we'll never know.

I really like the deliberately low-fi vibe of Aliens 3, perhaps a deliberate poke in the eye to the second films Hollywood / action sensibilities ?

What I cannot stand about the 3rd film is that the ending is almost identical the that in Terminator 2.

Well, 2001 is a much better movie than Alien. As is Solyaris, for example.

Alien is probably the best popcorn sci-fi there is, but 2001 is genuine sci-fi.

I love both films equally, very different though they are, but Alien "popcorn" ? Aliens maybe, be no way is Alien a popcorn movie.

Apart from when they all get their guns taken away.  I think Aliens levels the playing field with stuff like that, and the ship crashing, to heighten the dramatic tension successfully.

I like them both.  They're both great films in their own right.

Haha, I knew someone would mention 2001 as trumping them all.  I kind of agree, up until the point HAL is no more.  Then it all gets a bit weird and I have no idea what the end means. Reborn as a star child?  Whatevs.

Yeah i totally agree i alway's switch off at the end because it's a terrible, rushed ending solely there to suit Sigourney Weaver, so she can bow out of the franchise. But the whole thing is pointless because she returns to the role again afterwards and then they had to write in this clone bullshit that she's the 8th clone of the original Ripley DNA to justify it all.

The whole thing basically blacklisted Fincher for year's, and he hate's the film, the extended version is much better than the original cut but your right the ending is a complete mess, it's a shame because the rest of it is really watchable.

I once took a bird to see Alien 3 on a first date.

Ended up being an only date too. The film was meh and she was a ginger.

My first girlfriend I took her to Witness and then Blue Velvet.

Never got more than a bit if tongue and the third movie was a John Hughes classic, Pretty in Pink.

We did nasty things in my Dad's Ford Tempo.

She was not a ginger, though.
