Never got tofu, just doesn't taste good or add anything to a meal. I suppose it's basically soya but without the catastrophic environmental consequences, slavery issues and health risks

 

I appreciate you're trying to troll vegetarians, hence the invention of slavery issues and non-existent health consequences.

 

However, the environmental damage is real, and that is because the vast majority of soy is used as animal feed - in other words, the meat industry.

Mostly veggie myself due to the missus being one but neither of us feel the need to supplement the excellent vegetarian food we cook with meat substitutes. Obviously I can understand your missus requiring a meat substitute, probably one with three speeds

I've never actually tried tofu. 

 

Watched that Jamie Oliver fella' do a little documentary of how it's made and looks like solidified rotten milk with a hint of baby puke. 

 

Can't get beyond that.

 

I attended a training day once where the catering was provided by a wholefood co-operative. The course presenters, all dreads and handknitted shoes, raved so much at the prospect of the tofu pudding at lunch time I took an instant dislike to the idea of it and have never been able to bring myself even to try it

Its worth trying

As i said before i like it fried with chilli and salt. It takes on flavours well. Its really cheap in chinese supermarkets too.

 

Paneer is well worth having too. Its bloody lovely cubed and fried with peas,sweetcorn and baby potatoes in a sweet chilli sauce

Oh, I can argue with you, I just thought I'd let the arrant stupidity of your post stand proud on its own. As anyone who can read will be aware, I am literally the opposite of a Tory, so eco-Tory fascists like Zac Goldsmith are my enemies, not my heroes.

 

You criticise the use of "meat substitutes", seemingly unaware that, as a vegetarian, I am not substituting anything for meat, merely avoiding it in my diet. Describing an actual vegetable (soybeans) as a "meat substitute" is ridiculous.

 

While I am sure you and your wife derive all your protein needs from the menfolk of your village, I confess that I prefer to consume beans in their various forms, and I am unapologetic about that.

 

I should point out that I'm not the only vegetarian here; if you want to troll me directly, you would be better off reverting to your normal practice of attacking supporters of liberty. Fewer innocent bystanders that way.

Nope, I'm fine with people eating quorn, which he didn't seem to like near the start of the thread. Eat it myself too sometimes, but wary of it so not a regular thing.

Why? Do you know something I don't? I like quorn, I'm not even a vego. Had quorn bolognaise the other day, was real good.

We've got some ace vegemetarian recipe books at home, I'll post the links when I'm home.

 

The missus is pescatarian and I've been on a low meat diet for years. It's made me a much better cook for having to treat vegetables as the main ingredient and not just a side. We use a lot of Thai, Chinese and Mexican recipes, they seem to produce the best veggie food.

 

I love tofu, it just needs treating well. It's a great source of protein and will take whatever flavours you want with the right time spent on it.

Had a tofu kung po from chinese last night, the tofu in that was great. I used to also get the same as what Flashheart is saying with salt and chilli, from a chinese down the street from where I used to live. It was one of my favourites and could be added easily to several other meals.

Based on this thread I've just gone out and bought a 250g bag of Soya mince for a bargain price of £1.29. Going to make a faux shepherds pie for dinner because it's that kind of weather.

 

I assume after being soaked in boiling water it'll plump up in size?

I hope you like it better than I did.

I tried it once but just didnt like the texture at all. I went back to making my meatless Shepherd's Pie with a layer of cooked green lentils
