Summer 2013 Transfer Thread

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and his senior coaching staff met in a Chester hotel immediately the season ended to answer one important question. How do we make real progress next season?

Rodgers had already been promised around £20 million to spend, plus, importantly, whatever he could generate from sales, but the money has not been earmarked for a flagship signing. In fact, the coaching staff were unanimous, that if the team was to move forward, the defence had to be scrapped and rebuilt. The retirement of Jamie Carragher had brought even more focus on the problem.

Apart from Daniel Agger, the defence is regarded as either underperforming or simply inexperienced and Rodger’s intends to bring in up to three experienced defenders.

The first, Kalo Toure, out of contract with Manchester City, has already been lined up but Rodgers is also exploring moves for Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott and Alexander Kolorov. Others in the frame include FC Twente’s Brazilian defender Douglas and, increasingly likely, the highly-rated Greece international Kyriakos Papadopoulos

The suggestion with the last is that the club will soon table a £12 million bid.

Although just 21, Papadopoulos has huge experience, having become the youngest-ever player in the Greek league at the age of 15. The Schalke star has already turned down a £16m move to Russia’s Zenit St Petersburg, but would relish the opportunity of lining up alongside Toure at the heart of the new-look Liverpool defence.

Can't see Cheshire Today having any real insight to be honest but thought it was worth posting, interesting about Lescott but can't see us signing both him and Toure and Toure seems likely, wouldn't be keen on Kolarov either, Enrique's better and he'd probably cost more than he is worth to be cover

Seems legit.

Begovic, Papadopolus and Wanyama would really strengthen us right down the middle. And thats where the weaknesses are. I'd be delighted with those 3 signings.

that would be excellent along with toure or lescott and a winger.

Talkshite just reporting that Shelvey is off to west ham.Be a good move for him IMO.

Bit gutted about this if true but understand it.

Have a West Ham supporting mate who thinks Shelvey is absolute dog shite, doesn't rate him at all, ive tried to convince him hes not as bad as he thinks and theres a good player in there waiting to come out etc... gotta laugh though because he will be pissed right off at this.

Your west ham supporting mate probably thinks that and that Mark Noble is better than Iniesta.

Begovic' date=' Lescott or Toure, Papadopolous, Wanyama, Eriksen or Tello.[/quote']

I can't pretend I keep up to date on all the transfer rumours . Are you saying Tello is a real possibilty ? I really rated the lad a couple of years back and he has got better this year . I think he would be a fantastic signing for us. Just cant see it unfortunately

Pepe to Barca, and Begovic to us, with butland already on board at Stoke, stacks.

Lescott would offer us the experience that Carra's departure takes from us, but I would guess that FSG would not want his wage demands.

Gareth Barry may be told he can by City too, that would be a real upgrade on our midfield, and his versatility would be a big boost to the squad.

Micah Richards is the one to keep an eye on though.

I'm hoping so, it seems that a swap deal with Reina could happen, we should just play hardball if Rodgers wants him, id be delighted with these signings.

Fucking hell Lescott?!

He is truly shit and that would be a monumental fuck up, he has no composure on the ball

I hope we dont make the mistake of trying to re-build the team on peanuts, we have been doing that for years.

We need to give Rodgers money so he can buy proper talent not fucking shit rejects.

He doesn't rate Noble or many of them at all, not impressed with any of it under Allardyce, Its a 200 odd mile round trip for him to go to the game and he fucks off at half time or during the second half a lot of the time out of frustration/boredom.

Carroll he does like though.

I reckon at least one of the centre backs will be Kyriakos Papadopoulos. Hope we don't go near Bergovic as he is not as great as people make out.

He seems to have a few games when he saves everything or 4 out of 5 games clean sheets and then lets in 19 in the next 7 games. I like Mignolet but yet again he is as error prone as Bergovic. There are not many great keepers about , but there seems to be a few error prone young ones around who might make it big.

If we had to replace Reina my first choice would be Ter Stegen from M'Gladbach. If Reina isn't leaving but we want a keeper to challenge him and have the time to develop then either Mignolet or Begovic would be fine with me.

They're both around the same age Reina was when he signed for us with the former being 24 and the latter being 25. It seems to me that Keepers tend to peak much later than outfield players and when they do sustain that peak for longer. Begovic for the £6m that I've seen quoted in certain sources would be good business, as he's a good keeper with time to improve and, if Reina stays, learn.
