I badly broke my tib and fib 3 weeks ago, and there are a few things i would like to know.

1) I have nerve damage in my foot, pins and needles, soreness etc. How long before this gets better ?

2)I have had my leg elevated for 3 weeks now, how much longer do i have to do this ???

3) I have noticed muscle wasteage on my whole leg, can anyone recommend a good program to gradually build this leg back up when this fucking cast etc eventually comes off after xmas.

Any doctors/surgeons, or anyone else , any advice welcome.

Ta !

I had surgery on my hip area a couple of years back.

It took over a year for the nerves to start feeling better for me but the damage was done during surgery so im sure if its the same recovery time.Do not rush back into exercise when the cast comes off.

Best advice is to get to a private physio when the cast comes off if you can afford it.Even one visit and they will give you the correct exercises to do

Broken both legs, albeit only Tib on both occasions, and swimming was what I hammered once the cast was off. Was back playing football pretty quickly on both occasions. Plenty of physio around the foot as well to break up the scar tissue/shite around your ankle.

Without point out the FUCKING obvious, you are being treated by medical experts as it is. Why are you not asking them directly? Or are you that simple that you are not listening tio the experts that you have a direct line to and would rather listen to people on the internet.

Well obviously you are stupid enough so listen to my advice:

1) I have nerve damage in my foot, pins and needles, soreness etc. How long before this gets better ?

About 34 weeks

2)I have had my leg elevated for 3 weeks now, how much longer do i have to do this ???

About 26 days, but if you bath in vodka jelly only 15 days.

3) I have noticed muscle wasteage on my whole leg, can anyone recommend a good program to gradually build this leg back up when this fucking cast etc eventually comes off after xmas

Wanking and gambling.

I had a nasty break about 13 years ago, straight through the leg and another break through the leg into the ankle. Had pretty much the same treatment and problems as you describe.

There's fuck all you can do for muscle wastage till you're out of plaster. Go swimming every day as soon as you are. Bio oil for scar tissue and talk the bird into massaging it every night, even if it's just women's moisturiser she uses it'll help.

Best tip I can give you is once you're up and about on crutches don't under any circumstances wear decent daps on your good foot. Everyone has a funny way of walking and the edge of the heel will wear down ridiculously quick ruining a pair of daps.

I also had this plastic stocking with a rubber seal which you wore over the plaster meaning you could have a bath still. You'll end up feeling sweaty and dirty really quickly led with your foot raised and you'll want to wash more often than usual.

W71, I severely broke my ankle and parts of my leg beginning of June this year as a result of moshing too hard in a Metallica mosh pit. I had 3 ops on the ankle and have an 8inch plate with about 8 screws in the leg and a huge pin horizontally through the ankle to hold it together. Im due a 4th op soon to remove the ankle pin, however this may be postponed to let the pin break naturally.

The consultants said I would not be walking until after xmas, however being the modern miracle that I am, Im walking about almost fine now, hope to be doing some light jogging after xmas and resurrecting my tennis career come Easter.

Some answers to your questions based on what I went through...

1. I would get this checked out. Pins and needles can be a bad sign. Have you asked your Dr\consultant about this?

2. Is your leg swollen? How high have you been elevating it? If your leg is swollen, you need to get it high. My ankle was swollen like a fucker, I laid on the floor piled high blankets and cushions on the sofa/bed and did this for hours at a time. You could feel the liquid draining from the ankle and it helped loads. If you're just laid flat with your leg on a pillow, this is no good, needs to be up proper high!

My ankle still swells after walking for a bit and I still elevate it high a couple of times a day. I was told it might be a year before the welling subsides properly.

3. My whole leg wasted away, right up to my arse cheek and the inside of my leg totally imploded in. Dont be too concerned about this, it comes back after a few weeks. I did loads of exercises on a swiss ball, deffo get one if you havnt. Do some real basic stuff on it like crouching and raising whilst leaning on the ball against a wall, this will totally help. Then putting all the weight on your bad leg and build up etc.

Make sure you are massaging proper oil\cream into your scar.

Have you been referred/ getting physio yet? I would hold back on paying for any physio until you've seen one on the NHS. I was lucky, Ive been getting individual physio 3\4 a week following the removal of my cast. If your injury is straight forward and you're getting physio on the NHS really no need to pay.

Whatever exercises the physio suggests, do it above and beyond however many times they say. Keep your leg moving when sat on the sofa for example. The more you do (within reason) the quicker it will heal. And learn how to walk again properly. Sounds stupid but I had to do this, felt like a right nonce, but it worth it.

Hope this helps.

Remember, moshing can be dangerous kids.

Fractured tib, fib, ankle shoved about in the process, didn't realise the extent of the break until they'd opened it to plate it as i struggled to hold still for the xray.

I'm ace. I was walking on it in it's cast at 3 weeks, cast off at 4 weeks, slight limp but just went back to the pool and did some water resistance using swimming toggles and floats which also helped with balance. The thing still gives me grief if i do to much it, my ankle swells like a balloon and the scar area still has little to no sensation 14 years on. Bearing in mind i'm no size 10, I do around 4 sessions of circuit training a week and two of kick boxing.

I mentioned the pins and needles loads of times to the specialists, they dismissed it.

I dont have any swelling at all, it never even swelled when i broke it, i reckon im a fucking robot.

I recall you asking the forum for advice when you were on the brink of losing your home. Yet you're having a go at the OP for asking about medical advice.

You've got the self awareness of a raped cat.

Correct yes. And within that there where lots of jokes as like many threads whom ask for a serious nature. As being the model athlete that I am, I have never broken anything and can't help. Anyway no ontention meant and looking back on it now without my sunday beer head it may have been a bit harsh but a jest in itself was all that it was.

All the best Withnail. Break a leg, I mean get well soon.

My mate is currently recovering from a shattered tib and fib (broken in 22 places) and my father in law did it last year.

Basically you have to be very patient and keep the leg above the heart for a very long time. At 5 months my father in law was jogging again and has had no real trouble with it.

Both of them had the pins and needles thing and it goes eventually.

The worst thing is that the first stage of the recovery is very long and very slow, but then you're up and about pretty quick after that. Once the cast comes off and you're in the boot you think that it'll be no time, but you're in that fucker for a long stretch.
