Oktoberfest

Have been to Munich. Have not been to Oktoberfest. Head out towards the Schwabing district if you get the chance (just a couple of miles or so north of the city centre), which is full of cheaper bars, clubs and restaurants. Loads of students there though, unless that sort of thing bothers you.

Yes, it was superb.

German food and sense of humour a highlight. (Why they're maligned for both is a mystery to me.)

Great beer a given.

Spent one afternoon drinking in the Hofbrauhaus with a couple of great old blokes in full traditional lederhausen.

They couldn't speak a word of English, nor we of German... but one of the funniest afternoons of my life.

Unlike northern Germany, English is not always taught in schools so less people are fluent. The Hofbrauhaus has reserved seating and their metal tankards are kept in cages behind the seats as some old guys almost live in the pub (good life eh!). Germany has a reputation as being unfriendly but it's a place I always feel comfortable in and have been eight times in nine years. I could easily move there without any problems. It's an incredible place.

Pig, I've never found them unfriendly either. Germans are some of the most hospitable folk around. My best friend when I was growing up was a German and all his family were German. I spend almost as much time at their house as I did my own.
