Lucas has not improved.

Got to be honest here - the vacant hole left by hin tonight exposed the fact that, as the only destroyer we have in the squad, he is if not the most important player in the side, certainly one of them.

Spearing tried hard and gives everything but Lucas is fifty times the player he is. Dempsey, and later Dembele, marauded all over the front of our back line, which meant that Agger and Skrtel had a lot of work to do; something which they've had protection from in the shape of Lucas in the last few months.

We've played some lovely, slick and offensive minded football while Lucas has been in the side as well. He might not contribute to that side of the game in spades but having someone playing that role allows the creative mids to do something with the ball. Spearing sadly isn't good enough and will now be out for three games. Through no fault of his own like, it was a fucking shocking decision by the ref.

A bit OTT there don't ya think? There's been plenty of occasions this seasons when other teams have got in amongst our back 4 even when Lucas was playing. I thought Jay did quite well in his first full game of the season until his unfortunate sending off. He was always available for the ball and got it moving it quickly. It's quite possible that we could have run out winners last night if he had stayed on.

Lucas' transfer value is going to increase by £1m for every game we don't win from now on. I think at the moment he's now rated by many on here to be worth £30m, but by May 2012 he could be worth £45m.

It's awesome, people whooping and laughing and crying, and cheering and letting off fireworks in the run-up to his return, counting down the days, threads started when he begins training again, pictures posted of his first tackle back in training, until finally he's given a start in the team...then the game kicks off and you realise that we missed a really ordinary, good, but ordinary defensive midfielder who gives away lots and lots of free kicks and gets chewed up by the likes of Karl Henry.

People on TLW seem to be staggered at the way in which RAWK posters still cling on to the worth of Benitez, and you mock them for it, but you don't see the irony at all in doing exactly the same but with Lucas.

It's not the same people though is it you spastic? The ones who dont like Lucas are the ones who despise Benitez.

Not for me, and I'm not being a cunt about it unneccessarily, he's not not in the bracket of £20m midfielders.

I think you've got three brackets of midfielders, for example, those that cost £30m+, those that cost £20m+, and those that cost under that.

My view on it:

£35m+

(eg)

Mascherano

Alonso

Xavi

Fabregas

Modric

Sneijder

Yaya Toure

Ozil

Busquets

Schweinsteiger

£20m+

(eg)

Parker

Moutinho

De Rossi

Hamsik

Vidal

Wilshire

Inler

Cambiasso

Martinez

Under £20m

(eg)

Arteta

Lucas

Fletcher

Mikel

Ramires

Lampard

Sandro

Felipe Melo

Alex Song

Van Bommel

Let's be honest about it. If you can't be honest about it then fuck off.

Not OTT in the slightest. Spearing hasn't got the stature, the presence or the calmness that Lucas has. That position is the most difficult to fill in a lot of sides and it has taken Lucas three years to get to this point. Jay spent half the night on Monday chasing shadows.

I could extend the same courtesy to Speo but I don't see what he has got that makes him a viable option as cover. Lucas is a regular for Brazil; Spearing has only just got his chance due to an injury to somebody else. He's 23 and hasn't established himself in the side?

I like Jay, I really do. He has courage and heart in spades but I'm sorry he's not in the same bracket as Lucas. If he was, he'd have been in the side as a regular a long time ago and Lucas would be a memory. I don't want to go on about the gulf in ability too much because I would love to see Speo do well. But I don't think it can be as a regular in a side with European ambition.

Just my opinion. I hope that Jay can prove me completely wrong over the next few months.

I dont know really about this. Last season when he came on against Arsenal on the opening day of the season I was absolutely livid because I felt he offered us nothing on the field. I think it was when he got sent off away at Stoke later that year that I just gave up on him. But now he is our best player. I think at that moment he himself began to take games by the scruff of the neck and his performances at Chelsea and Man City in the league and his one man mission to go after Torres in the League Cup were simply heroic. I think he has improved and really turned a corner for us. On the other hand I may have just been comparing him to Alonso and Masch for too long. I can see why other think he hasnt improved but I believe he has.

It's not so much a case of absence making the heart grow fonder, or the grass being greener on the other side... The fact with players like Lucas, and Hamann before him, is it's often the case that you only notice how good they actually are when they're not playing. It's easy for flair players to show off their skills during games but for players like Lucas their hard work often gets overlooked and taken for granted, whilst others catch the headlines, and some even give them stick for not being attack minded enough. It's only when they're missing that you really notice how exposed the back four gets without them. Remember Real Madrid only realised what they'd lost after they let Makelele go to Chelsea.

Lucas is our most important player firstly because he plays a such a pivitol role in the team and we don't have anyone who can do his job quite as good as he can. Spearing is still up and coming and Gerrard, who can play that role, is always injured. Because it's such a specialist role I'd argue that if other key players such as Suarez or Reina had have been written off for the season, as good as they both are, I think we'd find it slightly easier getting at least half decent cover for their postions in January, as opposed to the difficulty we might find trying to get someone in who does what Lucas does.

Finally it's been pleasing to at last see some well deserved praise coming in for Lucas these past few months from some of those who've slagged him for so long. I came into work this morning and my mate, who normally slates him, actually came out and said "we missed Lucas last night." Never expected to hear such words from him! He really has peaked these last few months but I will go as far as saying he's actually been playing quite well since the latter days of Rafa's reign which is a good 18 months now.

We're going to miss him loads but the one sliver lining is at least his absence will almost certainly silence the last of his remaining critics.

Fair enough mate that's your opinion.

Until the sending off I didn't really observe much of a difference in our style of play from other matches this season as it evolved in much the same manner. I take your point re Lucas being ahead of Jay on merit but I don't believe there's as much between them as you make out and what I mean by that is not that Jay is brilliant but that Lucas imho is not as great as some make him out to be. Lucas has played very well against the bigger teams this season but his performances against the so called lesser teams haven't been all that on occasion.

It might be time for our defence to play a slightly higher line now Aggers back and settled and not rely on a specialised cm like Lucas from now on perhaps?

He has come a long way Lucas and he's usually boss against the top 3-4. Fair play to the lad for that after the stick he received (rightfully imo, he was poor/average for 2 years) when he first came here. I'd still let him go if we got an offer in the region of £10-£12M though.

Agree, shift him as he's approaching his peak 5 years.

Hamsik worth £20m+? Comedy gold that, and the rest of the post really.

Who are we gonna sign for £10m to replace Lucas? Are you going to list a load of average to shite midfielders playing in the premiership? Diame anyone?
