It think the secret of a good sitcom is to be able to mix poignant moments with ones of hilarity and make it work as a result. Friends does it quite well. It's not the best sitcom ever made but it's still fairly decent.

Friends is to comedy and sitcoms what Jack the Ripper was to equal rights for women.

It's one of those shows it's not cool to like or even admit to liking. However, I used to think it was fucking ace: Chandler's dry humour, Joey's dopeyness and love of food, Ross' nerdiness and Monica's anally retentive thing were all hilarious at one time or another. Maybe it went on a bit too long and occasionally did a bit too much schmaltz, but I tell you what, I've fucking pissed myself many a time watching that show. When it's on its game, it's as side-splittingly funny as almost anything else that's ever been on the box.

Earlier series for their time were actually very good in a early/mid 90's kind of way. But endless numbers of series, weaker writing in later years and endless repeats on CH4 and E4 have ruined any redeeming features.

 

Still the odd comment, gag and scene I can laugh at though.

Series' 1-5 were excellent (1 was a mixed bag - still a comedy finding its niche) - 6 onwards were very varied. By the end it was pretty much an embarrassment - relying on each character's stretched stereotypes and increasingly obvious, pointless jokes and storylines.

 

But in its day it was as good as any other.

It was OK. Joey and Chandler were great, Phoebe sometimes and the rest annoying. There was a great pair of tits in the last few series, thats all I can remember. I wouldnt watch a repeat now.

Friends was good. I like it because it's so easy to watch, even now after seeing every episode about 5 times I can still put it on and laugh at it.

It gets a lot of stick, but that is mainly for the twattish uberfans who want to be in it. If you just see it as a comedy and not a lifestyle programme, then it could be fucking spot on. The crappy love themes were always tiresome but the characters were good and the writing was excellent.
