Just reading about a Pro-Palestine protest at Auschwitz.

9 people.

Therefore the hundreds of thousands of people around the world protesting against genocide are Hamas-supporting anti-Semites.

QED.

Nah.  It's yet another "Rico has got nothing better to do than to try to troll strangers with a load of witless lies" thread.

That would ring true if the transgender thread didn't exist.

Back to the topic of the thread...

I saw this documentary tonight about "cancelling" and public shaming.  Definitely worth a watch.

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt11188206/

This 'cancel culture' label that has been bandied about is basically just a publicity stunt in new clothes. 'Shaming ' somebody has no real effect,in fact it's quite positive for those who seek it out as they know it wont really harm them. Ironically in some countries cultures, maybe Japan? it really would be devastating for those involved given how 'shame' is a big deal and in some cases woven into law. Does Japan have Twitter?

People have lost their jobs, had to face genuine threats of violence and have suffered severe mental health problems, including PTSD.

I meant for those who seek it. The horrible cunts who want to raise their profile and usually have the financial backing to do so. You know the type.

Oh, yeah, those cunts can fuck off.

The people in the documentary were "civilians" who may or may not have done something disagreeable, but then became the focus of a mob on social media and the professional media, leading to real-life impacts.

There are some very interesting ideas in the film, like Jon Ronson pointing out that if you see someone doing something you think is wrong, the urge to see them get some sort of comeuppance is a good thing; the trouble is when a million people simultaneously want you to get comeuppance, lives get ruined.

I think you have just contradicted yourself - if they are raising their profile then "shaming" does do something for them and they are getting exactly what they want out of it.
