Should Glen Johnson get a new contract?

Brendan Rodgers has intervened in Glen Johnson’s contract stand-off with Liverpool to declare he wishes to keep the England defender at Anfield. The 30-year-old is a free agent this summer and eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club this month, having resisted Liverpool’s offer of a short-term extension on terms reduced from his £120,000-a-week wage.

Liverpool’s offer was made late last season but Johnson wanted a longer-term deal and said in November that he was “not going to go crawling to anybody”. An impasse remains between the two parties but Rodgers has hinted a resolution that once appeared highly unlikely could happen and urged Liverpool to extend the right-back’s six-year career at Anfield.

“There is nothing new as yet but I am hopeful he will stay and hopeful that we can find a solution and keep him here,” said Rodgers, who clarified he is not involved in contract negotiations at the club. “Ian [Ayre, the chief executive] does an excellent job negotiating with the owners for what they want and what they require,” he explained.

Rodgers admitted his cautious optimism that Johnson will stay is based on conversations he has held with the player. “Like every player, he wants that security and for it to be sorted earlier than it is now but he also realises he is at one of the biggest clubs in the world with a team that is growing. He would want to be a part of that. I think he is more than happy to work with the club to find a solution for him to stay. He loves being here.

“His game will maybe adapt over the coming years. He is not the marauding full-back of six, seven years ago but he is still a quality player with experience. He is one that we are looking to keep and, between the agent and the club, hopefully we can organise something.”

He's like Jason Voorhees, just when you think it's okay to come out of the airing cupboard into a post Glen Johnson utopian world, he's standing there in the kitchen with a Glen Johnson mask on waiting for you to run past him so he can give chase.

Like Lovren, his injury has improved the team.  I'm not one to wish injury on anyone but it's a shame it's took that to get them out of the team.  Hopefully the manager has the sense to keep it that way now & there's no new contract for this lazy toilet seat thief.

If Brendan thinks he's worth another contract then Brendan is wrong and I'd have to question Brendan's judgement. Brendan is not making much sense here if this is true. Because everyone can see Johnson is Fucking shite except of course, Brendan.

I don't read it like that.

Glen is still a part of the team until the end of the season. As a manager you just have to say what BR says, He can't go public saying "we want him out of here ASAP", can he?

If BR wants him it'll be reflected in the offer on the table for Glen. I doubt that offer is even close to what Glenn would accept. The writing's on the wall. He'll not be here next season.

Friday 13th would have had a very low body count if Johnson was doing the chasing. He'd have wobbled along, cut inside and ended up in Crystal Lake

Rumoured to be signing a new 3 year deal!

Glen Johnson will turn down the chance to join Roma and sign a new three year contract with Liverpool.

The 30-year-old was heading for the Anfield exit this summer after an impasse over contract talks allowed Roma to step in and offer the England international a Bosman transfer.

Johnson was free to talk to foreign clubs as his Liverpool deal was due to expire in July.

Inter and AC Milan also showed interest but Roma were most keen and Johnson was interested after hearing good reports back from former England teammate Ashley Cole.

Liverpool had looked unlikely to return to the negotiating table until manager Brendan Rodgers intervened. He called in Johnson for a chat about his future and insisted he still had a role to play.

Rodgers is wary that the loss of Steven Gerrard will leave him short of experienced players in the dressing room while recent success playing a 3-4-2-1 system has reaffirmed his belief that formation would suit Johnson's attributes better.

After speaking with the manager at length, Johnson has been convinced he can continue his career at Anfield.

Rodgers said: 'The intention will be to keep everyone – we can't have three or four leaving next season. Steven will obviously be a loss. When you are losing someone of that calibre of man and player it would be a loss to any club.

'For the younger players to develop their potential they are going to need that seniority around them. You can't just have a whole group of young players.
