Godfather 2 or Goodfellas or Scarface

Scarface is absolute fucking shite. One of the most overacted, overrated pieces of cack ever filmed.

The other two are classics.

Now get your fucking shinebox.

I wouldn't call it fucking shite but the rest is right, it doesn't belong in the same sentence as the other 2 mentioned.

Massively overrated especially by black men on MTV cribs who all have the poster in their "crib".

Oh and Goodfellas is the best. I know the Godfather films are great but Goodfellas is just non stop entertainment.

For me goodfellas loses a bit after Tommy gets whacked to be honest Rex; certainly in terms of pace.

Godfather 2 is just epic. Set over two generations. The demise of Michael from a decent enough fella into a monster, the rise of Vito and how he met Clemenza etc., For me it wasn't the scene in Cuba between Michael and Fredo that was the most poignant but after Fredo is killed and Michael's remembers the scene at the dinner table when he signed up.

The scene where Michael closes the door on Fay and when he finds out about the abortion are unbelievably acted.

Not just the best gangster film of all time, but arguably the best film full stop.

If anyone hasnt read the Godfather and the other books that were written other authors after they really should have a look at them, top top books and in goes into more details about other characters than the film does. The book from Nicholas Pileggi(Wiseguys), that Goodfellas was based on are also worth reading, there is a later book from him and Henry Hill aswell

I'm watching the Sopranos Rem and my fourth (and last) Tooheys New is in honour of the little fella. I hope he is a strong and masculine child.

I wouldn't compare Scarface with the other two, but it's nowhere near as bad as it's being made out, the first half of the movie in particular, in fact everything up to the blimp, I kind of lose interest after that.

For the genre I would put Shooters a long way above all three.

The best three gangster movies are;

1, Shooters

2, Going off big time

3, Brookside- the lost weekend.

I was only talking about Going Off Big-Time at the weekend. The movie Scorcese wishes he made.

3. Scarface.

Agree with the order. I don't think Scarface is a million times behind them but its definitely the weaker of the two.

For ages I'd have said Scarface was better than Carlitos Way but it just isn't. Scarface is great though.

The mistake I made with Scarface was watching it a second time, maybe fifteen years after I first saw it.

Absolutely loved it when I watched it as a teenager but it hadn’t aged that well when I watched it again, for me anyway. Not saying it’s a bad film, it’s good, just not at the level of the other two.

The other two films in this non poll are timeless. I reckon they stand up to multiple viewings, films you can go back to throughout your life.

Pretty sure it’s been done on the forum before but I’d have removed Scarface and added:

Godfather

Once Upon a Time in America*

Casino

Maybe one or two others I’m forgetting.

*Right up there with the very best films of this type for me.

Scarface belongs in polls with Carlitos Way, Donnie Brasco, The Untouchables etc. Good films, great films even, but not quite in the same category as Goodfellas, Godfather...
