Torres set for Spain friendly - Liverpool FC

The surprise return of Fernando Torres yesterday has led to reports in Spain that the Liverpool striker will be included in Vicente del Bosque's squad for an upcoming friendly.

Torres played 15 minutes of Liverpool's 0-0 draw with Manchester City yesterday after 39 days out with a knee cartilage injury which was operated on.

The former Atletico Madrid striker is now expected to be included in the Spain squad for the friendly match with France on March 3 much to the chagrin of Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez who will be eager to keep him fresh for the end of the season.

"El Nino" has previously picked up injuries whilst playing for Spain, most notably his groin problem in October.

Despite having no impact in the 15 minutes he played at Eastlands, Torres is now expected to play a part in Liverpool's upcoming matches against Unirea Urziceni and Blackburn.

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

Don't see the problem. He's not injured anymore and will want to play. Lets face it, the lad could get injured in his sleep, so there's no point worrying about him playing for Spain.

Well I am sure Del Bosque will want Torres at the World Cup far more than he will at this friendly, so I don't understand why he could have not left him out of this squad and let him continue his rehabilitation to full fitness and form at Liverpool.

That game is in something like 9 days time and Torres has only played 15 minutes of football.

If he did go, I would hope he would only make a 10 minute cameo where they could assess his fitness. But in the past, they have just thrown him right in.

So this is from the media watch section of the official site, there are no quotes from Del Bosque and the source appears to be imscouting.com who don't mention any actual source but say 'reports in Spain'.

It's not worth getting worked up about until the facts are out there. imscouting have done their job though, I just clicked on their site despite never hearing about them before....

i don't see the sence in picking the strongest side for these friendly internationals coming up.all the coaches going to the world cup must know there strongest 11,it would make more sence to look at the reserve players that they are planning on taking and those they are not sure about.

Torres back in Spain squad for France friendly | Football | Reuters

7:02 ET, Fri 26 Feb 2010

MADRID, Feb 26 (Reuters) - Spain coach Vicente del Bosque recalled Liverpool striker Fernando Torres to his squad for Wednesday's friendly against France in Paris.

Torres missed the European champions' friendlies against Argentina and Austria in November due to injury and takes the place of Valencia forward Pablo Hernandez.

"This is not an absolutely final list for the World Cup, only one for the friendly against France," Del Bosque said at a news conference on Friday.

"Torres played in Liverpool's last (league) match and seems to have recovered and he looks to be in a condition to play," he added.

"We have had no differences with (Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez), nor with any other coach."

That's just great. No doubt he'll return broken yet again, leaving us to pick up the pieces. Why doesn't Rafa grow a set of balls and tell Del Bosque and the Spanish FA to fuck off? Does he not want a conflict with his countrymen? And why the fuck don't we get compensation from Spain for the injuries Torres has sustained while away with his country?
