Except in this case SA asked for a bowlers wicket. Alan Donald was on the local coverage and he said he was asked by Flowers for his thoughts. Donald told Flowers that he would bowl first.

Even if the wicket wasn't doing much putting SA in first would have put them under pressure to score runs quickly as weather delays are going to happen. Going after runs brings wickets.

Having said all of the above Englands top order failed again. OK Cooke got a shocker (even with a replay) but Trott and Petersen appear tp have really done no thinking about a game plan.

I don't think Cooke's dismissal was dodgy. His foot was behind the line, albeit in the air.

Good post. Strauss just kopped out and thought if he batted first and piled the runs on then it was game over. If he had put the South Africans in they were never going to score quick on this pitch and it would have put them under immense pressure to put a decent total up and then get their timing right when to declare in both innings should we not bowl them out. Strauss handed their bowlers an incentive and they took it. Still not over as the weather forecast is not good and they still have to get a lead and then bowl us out again. More twists and turns in this match yet imo.

The referal that De Villiers just had gave him not out because it was going over but I thought that the 3rd umpire didn't see the end part of Hawk eye. Does the umpire get the full track of the ball or just were the ball hits the pad?

He gets to see how far the ball pitched from the stumps. Presumably at the start of every match, depending on the pitch, they come to some sort of agreement about at what length the ball is going over the top. So maybe anything pitching further away than 2.7m (for e.g) from the stumps they give not out.

Indeed. I've said this many times before, possibly even on this thread, that Harper and Koertzen aren't even fit to Umpire in club Cricket. They are appalling, Harper is the worst that I have ever seen.

Taufel, Dhar and Bowden are three best Umpires out there, sadly they can't be everywhere all the time.

Not defending SA here but those decisions were down to umpires (first line or referral). Darryl Harper is the particularly shite referral judge in question.

Which makes it all the more ironic when they get all uppity about the English press and their questions to Smith about walking. Having said that they should be pointing the finger at the officials. Game will be over barring weather interruptions by tomorrow.

Can't see us saving it now. But if anybody had offered a draw on tour to S:A before it started i would have taken it. Some positives to take away from the series. I honestly think we'll be better equipped to take on the Aussies in their own back yard this time.
