Got a JVC Enviro Camcorder with a built in HD which ended up going in the pool while on holiday. Camera will be insured but gutted about all the footage on the HD. Tried plugging it into the laptop but there is no power so its not being recognized by the computer. Took it to a local camera shop and the guy didnt have a clue. Anybody know if I can salvage anything from the HD and if so, how?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated, Cheers

First thing to do is get the hd out of the camera. I'm guessing this is a small one, so you need to figure out what connections it has once it's out.

The you can try to connect it and see if it spins. If it doesn't, you need someone with a bit of electrical nous to try and get it working. At this point it starts to cost money, unless you know someone with the required skills.

If that also fails, there are companies around that solve this kind of problem for a premium price.

You can't really tell till the HD is out of the camera so you can see what sort of connections it has. But it's possible that once out, you may be able to get a USB adapter or something.

The problem then, is that he data might not be saved in an easily readable format, e.g. some form of mpeg. It may require a camera to decode it n the fly as you export it via component, firewire, etc.

Best to talk to JVC at this point. Also worth trying AVForums.com Home
