I hate to say it, but Chelsea are still breathing down our necks for SECOND PLACE.

The team, more than ever now, needs to finish strongly. Finishing third will be disappointing, cos on reflection, the stats will not show the details, they'll just register THIRD.

COME ON YOU REDMEN...

Anybody know the difference in prize money between 2nd and 3rd? Is it enough to buy Gareth Barry or Glen Johnson?

Vaguely remember that the winning pot was upped a few years ago to provide similar rewards to winning the champions league. Something like £50m for winning the premiership.

So you think we should throw it and go for third then, eh?

It was posted in another thread. 700K difference in EPL prize money. The real difference though is in CL TV money which is dependent on where you finished in your league. 40%,30%,15%,15% was what was said.

Thats £5m we dont have.

We need to twat the baggies and Spurs then at least we can look at our points total at the end and take some heart from it. Finishing 3rd will be a massive psychological blow, finish second and it could make the players think for the first time in years that we are good enough.

Not exactly. The CL TV money is divided as a percentage dependent on where you finished in the league, but also how far you progressed compared to other clubs in your league.

Finishing 4th last season and being the first English club out of the competition this season, means we will get the lowest TV payout for English clubs this season.

We get about 13m euros in prize money, about £10m in gate receipts plus the TV money for this season.

If Man Utd win it they will make 100m-110m euros from this year's competition.

Theirs still a job and a message to send to them down the 62, we need to finish with two good performances and a few more goals. The money matters but as every one in football now knows we are real contenders next season and the current form side of the premiership, to take the foot of the gas and head for the beach is not an option. Ferguson needs to spend his summer worrying about our challenge next season.

I agree. I think finishing with 86 points is a good spring board with which to move up a level next season. We may not have been as good as beating the lesser teams as Man Utd have, and that is where we have lost it this year. So let us go all out to get those 86 points and give the team a boost for next year's challenge.

Exactly, we could still finish 10 points behind them which would have them chuckling all summer. We need to win both remaining games.

You dont get £50m for winning the PL and neither will filth get 100m euros for winning the CL.

Championship clubs can get an additional £60m compared to their championship income for being promoted to the PL but PL clubs get nothing like £50m for actually winning it.

It also a fallacy that winning the CL gets a club 100m euros in prize money and other income. A club winning the CL will receive extra income from that competition in the region of £25m - £30m (or roughly 28m - 33m euros) which includes UEFA, tv and sponsors money.

It would be satisfying to finish above Abramovich's Chelsea for the first time.

I agree.

I agree with the sentiment of "first is first, second is nowhere" but by and large, we can be proud of our League campaign this season. Plus, as somebody has already has said, the psychological difference could be massive. 2nd to 1st doesn't sounds like a gap that can be bridged. 3rd to 1st sounds just that bit harder.

UEFA awards €3million to each team that qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, plus €2.4million for participating in the Group stage. A Group stage win was worth €600,000 per game, or €300,000 for a draw. Reaching the first knockout gets €2.2million prize payment.

UEFA prize money adds €2.5 million for each quarter-finalist, €3 million for each semi-finalist, €4 million for the runners-up and €7 million for the winners.

If Man U win it that's €22.5m in UEFA prize money alone.

6 home games with a 75,000 capacity at an average of £40-per-head is another £18m. Then they get the vast majority of the TV money as English champions and best English progression in the competition, last season they received >€20m .

They wont 'get' 100m euros for winning the CL. UEFA's prize money of 20m+ euros is the cumulative amount from qualification to winning.
