Who me or Paddy?

I hate Paddy because I am living in fear of the shotgun. I am twitching my curtains every 5 seconds looking for a dark figure in a balaclava and a 12 bore shotgun .I don't even think he needed my address to hunt me down. I reckon he has that sense of smell only a murderer would have.

I'm in your garden moving with the stealth of a tracking Wolf....I smell your fear.

It's actually 2 against 2, I agree with The Sir. Dirt is an excellent album, AiC were a grunge band not a metal band.

Indeed they were a grunge band, or certainly fell under that 'label'. Better than Nirvana? Pull the other one and I'll fall on my arse.

Dirt's not a bad album, but they were basically a pretty straightforward metal band who just happened to get popular at the same time as the grunge thing came out.

If grunge is anything (and its a bollocks term really) its about the punk rock edge of bands like Nirvana and Mudhoney, I think.

I didn't say that, in fact I stated that they weren't. The argument was that they were very, very good songwriters - probably better than anyone else at hat time with the exception of Nirvana.

AiC formed at the same time as Nirvana, in the same city.

I'd put them, as songwriters, behind

Soundgarden

Pearl Jam

Mudhoney

Dinosaur Jr

Nirvana

i.e pretty much every band that would be under the "grunge" label, and get a level of success.

Sure, they were largely influenced by metal, but you can't say they are a metal band because of it. The grunge genre is a very loosely used term, if you think of some of the bands labeled grunge you get wildly different styles of music.

In the past bands (from the Melvins to the Pixies) were categorized under grunge, and I don't think either of them are. The thing with Alice In Chains is that they're much heavier than most grunge bands and thus get labeled a "shit metal" band.

I am aware of that. Not sure what the point is?

If grunge is about location and timing, then they are grunge.

If its a sound, then that depends on the definition

Perhaps it was my interpretation of what you had written previously. To say they got lucky on the back of the genesis of grunge is unfair because it totally negates their input and influence on the whole grunge scene. Hence my reply.

That was said tongue in cheek when compared to the Melvins, early Meat Puppets, Jesus Lizard but you get the idea.

Ok - maybe its just a categorisation then. They've more in common with black album era metallica than they have with the majority of "grunge" bands of a similar status, barring maybe Soundgarden. Also basically a metal band, but a better one IMO. I suppose you've got 3 different types of music than come under the label - the punky stuff, the metal stuff and the straight hard rock stuff. I prefer the punky stuff, generally.

I am pretty sure I have had this argument before, but a lot of bands benefited from that scene. I am sure they would have been successful anyway because they did what they did pretty well, but they were exposed to a bigger audience than the average heavy metal band would be, because of grunge.
