£10m on a left winger when they've got Bramble and Boumsong at CB? Even Risdale jizzed some of his money away on defenders. They are an absolute joke, lurching from desperate signing to desperate signing like a drunken sailor propositioning anything with four limbs and a pulse on his last day of shore leave. They won't go down because they'll have enough to beat the bottom five or six teams and will pick up points when other sides slip up, but if the toon army are expecting anything more than top half, they're in for another disappointing season.

I bet Dunc's weeping into his newcy broon.

Just thinking about this from Newcastle's point of view. Im sure I read a few weeks ago that Roeder was told that he didnt have much to spend, they have 1 fit striker (whos shite), they have the comedy duo of Boumsong & Bramble in defence and the geordies have been bleating on about N'Zogbia and how good he is going to be on their left wing. So let them buy another left winger. Its not going to improve them as much as a decent striker a few decent defenders would.

5m for a world class player and were considering pissing 6m up against the wall on pennant.

Cant believe we didnt pull the stops out to get him

Interesting there's no comment from the Echo denying that we were ever for him

PS Alves does look espensive but so does every other player now, newcastle got a real bargain

your getting to be a grumpy oldman mate and it doesnt suit you. ;)

BTW its not shiete, newcastle have got a bargain and why do people dismiss it, is it envy ?. If we signed him for 5m we's all be saying its the deal of the century.

Until LFC deny that they every made an approach for him its reasonable to assume that the papers and TV saying we were given permission to talk to him were correct.

Still waiting for LFC mouthpiece the Echo to deny we made an approach.

BTW its harldy a moan pointing out Newcastel got a good deal

My understanding is that he left Chelsea because he wanted to be guaranteed first team football, and that he wanted to play that football on the left.

What stops were we supposed to pull out if so? Sending Gonzalez back to Spain?

Duff is the honesy monster - who gives a fuck where he goes?

Benitez: We don't want to sell AlonsoJul 24 2006

By Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ today issued a hands off warning to Real Madrid over speculation the Spanish giants are set to move for Xabi Alonso.

New Madrid boss Fabio Capello is believed to have identified Alonso as the player he wants to build his new look side around.

But Benitez is in no mood to lose the playmaker he paid £10.5m for in 2004 and Madrid will receive no encouragement from the Reds boss.

Benitez said: "We have had no official contact from Madrid and we do not want to sell Xabi."

Alonso has become one of Europe's finest playmakers since moving to Anfield and Benitez would understandably be loathe to lose a player whom he believes is only going to get better with age.

And with Alonso settled on Merseyside it would be a huge surprise if he was to seek a move away from a club where he has quickly established himself as a hero with the fans.

Liverpool are also bemused at reports suggesting they were beaten to Damien Duff by Newcastle United.

Chelsea offered Duff to the Reds and publicly declared they had given them permission to speak to the Irish international but Liverpool never registered any interest in the player.

Meanwhile, Benitez praised 17-year-old Craig Lindfield after his goalscoring debut at Crewe, but warned against turning the youngster into "a 45-minute superstar".

He said: "Lindfield is a good player but there is still a lot of work to be done for him and he needs to be stronger. You can't build a new star after 45 minutes."

Golnzalez and Duff could defo play in the same team, as you saw on saturday Gonzalez is too footed.

Anyway time to move on, its over now and i wont be making any further response to the childish twatish ill informed posts on this thread

Edit, just seen the echo and thats fair enough now. Newcastle still got a fantastic deal and Rafa didnt want him which is fine by me, even if I think he would have been a great signing

Because you covered yourself in glory with that response, didn't you? I don't know what's up with you at the moment, mate, but you're being a right chippy git. The thing I've always enjoyed about your posts is the good humoured eccentricity with which they're delivered - but that hasn't been much in evidence of late. You need to re-discover your mojo. Go watch your Istanbul DVD.
