My clearly-not-in-earnest Lambert suggestion... laughter was actually the aim. Well, a wry chuckle maybe... it clearly wasn't serious. Hence the "sentiment".

Look, you've yourself stated that we signed a player produced by a team consistently finishing mid-table who had the capability to be the main thrust behind a title push... if you can't see how that totally undermines your position I can't help you.

I'm sure there's a player at every midtable club that could make the step up, my point is there's not 4/5 at Southampton, otherwise they wouldn't be a midtable side

  • 1 month later...

This is getting a bit clearer now: I reckon it's any three from Swansea, West Brom, Palace, Sunderland, Cardiff and Fulham.  (So, any talk of players from Villa, West Ham or Southampton is not really relevant.)

I'm not sure any of those teams have any players who would set your pulse racing (which might explain why they're in such a shit position right now).

Both of Swansea's left backs are decent aren't they?

Davies is an excellent young player and Taylor looked very good in their first season up under Brendan, has had a bad injury since then though and has struggled to get his place back due to Davies and when he has played not looked as good as before but could just be due to not getting a run

OK - Hot quiz popshots, which players from teams relegated in the last 10 years were signed by top teams and improved those teams....

Go.

Is this game still open because I think I've just hit the motherlode?

Middlesboro relegated end of 2008-09

- Robert Huth

- Stewart Downing

- Adam Johnson

- Tuncay (played four games for Wolfsburg)

- Brad Jones

- Ross Turnbull

All moved on to top clubs. I will let other people debate whether or not they actually improved any of the sides they went to.........

My argument is that their mere presence motivated other players to greater levels of performance - so even though they didn't necessarily play a lot themselves they did improve these teams.

Huth moved to Stoke and has been there ever since

Johnson barely played in Premier League and got the City move based on his championship performances the next season

Tuncay went to Stoke directly from Boro not Wolfsburg

Downing went to Villa who were better than they are now but not a top team

Jones and Turnbull- certainly missing out on the improved a top team requirement

Whoa there!!!

No criteria stated that the move had to be directly from a relegated club.

Fair cop with Huth tho - I thought he had gone to the Chavs before Stoke.

And how do we know that it wasn't the intense pressure for places created by the presence of Jones (and Turnbull) that encouraged those ahead of them to such dizzying heights? (Thereby meeting the "improvement" criteria.)

Throw a drowning man a straw for fucks sake!
