Damian Comolli - Footballers Football Show last night

Did anyone else watch it? They had Comolli, and Brian McDermott, and Peter whatsisname the old Spurs DoF and now commentator.

The discussion was all about DoF role, and the subject of Liverpool came up a lot of times and it was very interesting.

Comolli raked up the plaudits for Suarez, and said that the Suarez/Carroll deal was far superior to the Torres/Babel departures, and that the decision to sign Carroll was one made by himself, Kenny AND his team (Clarke et al), and that they all pressed the button.

He defended Henderson because he was so young, and how its unfair to expect a young player to come in and make a difference at that age. Nobody mentioned Sturridge then, because that would make him sound wrong.

He mentioned Bale 6 or 7 times.

He also said that he was criticised for signing Bale, Modrid, Kaboul and Assou Ekotto, and then said look how tremendous they are now.

He said that he was given no reason when FSG sacked him, none.

It was noted than only 3 teams in current CL competiton at this stage do not have a DoF, and they are United, Arsenal, and Celtic.

Brian McDermott said that he has one at Reading, and he actually worked with Rodgers as well, and that the DoF is invaluable and sorts out all sorts of things like sports sciences, contracts, player targets, unhappy players, scouting, and requests to the board. He said that he picks up the phone about 3 times a day to talk to him.

Comolli then mentioned Bale a few more times.

Peter whatsisname defended the DoF role as well, not least because he was DoF at Spurs for a while, and Forest, and that it's vital for a person with footballing experience to be in the boardroom. He also thought that David Gill acted as a DoF for Ferguson, but not officially titled as such.

His record is very mixed, his reputation is for outlandish self-promotion and it's no wonder that novices like FSG fell for his patter.

£35 million on Carroll and £20 million on Downing and in particular the very nature of the Carroll deal with Newcastle effectively pulling our pants down and us willingly bending over raise serious question marks regarding his judgement however much he wants to spin it.

He claims FSG said that as long as we still made £15 million on the Torres deal they would sanction it. But I'd expect that of them, knowing fuck all about football. But anybody with half a brain could see that £35 million for a player as limited as Carroll is mental. He will never at any point in his career be worth anything over £20 million.

Downing was even worse. £20 million for a player who has always been average, with the odd good spell was absolutely crazy.

Didnt see it, but did he try and take some sort of credit for Bale ?

He was bought as a leftback, and a fucking terrible one at that.

That he's turned into some sort of a fucking monster of an attacking midfielder should only reflect badly upon Comolli as he scouted and signed him as a leftback.

Seems to be doing a lot of media work these days trying to defend his record.

£55m on Carroll and Downing and this fucking plank makes out that he was unlucky to get fired.

I applaud FSG for not bothering to tell him why he was kicked out. Why the fuck do you think Damien???

He signed Bale and Suarez, those 2 alone make up for all other duds including Carroll (who while overpriced at 35 mill is not worthless as he'll likely bring in at least 12 mil when sold) He also sold a washed up Torres for 50 fucking million...

the man can easily defend his record....you know the buying and selling of real players in the real world not Footymanager or Fifa fucking 13

many LB's make that transition, the raw talent was there, Redknapp turned him into a LM, another manager may have turned him into an outstanding LB.

He was hardly terrible at LB, on his worst days at LB I'm sure he could play you into the ground blindfolded and in leg irons.

Ex-fucking-scuse-me. But no...

Many LB's make the transition from being a mediocre to decent LB into one of the best attacking midfielders in the world ? Like fucking who ?

How does anyone know what he was signed as? It might have just been a development issue playing him left back, he kept my friend out of the Wales u16 or 18s squad and he said that he was always going to be a left midfielder as he was so technically good.

Fucking hell he was brought in to get into the figures and numbers so kenny could focus on the squad, piss it out ye sphincter damian, piss it out your sphincter and let the splashback runoff fall into our first team like so many other pissarse bum runoff who ever run out for us. You need to start shittin us some tiffanny cufflinks not trying to tell us its worth loads like a french delboy trotter with bbc spectacled authority.

To think Kenny took the hit for this shrove tuesday panboy?

I still can't believe anyone with his experience (or whatever) could make the Carroll deal seem reasonable. Why didn't he put the foot down and come up with any alternatives to a deal like that. Did they really not come up with any other name than Carroll's?

Wasn't the opening bid for Carroll 25 mill?, just insane.

Comolli should be executed very slowly and very painfully to fully realise his errors and faults.

I don't mind that he's a fucking moron; it's not a crime. It's the fact that he has risen to the posts of DoF at Liverpool and Spurs on the back of absolutely nothing and at both places he spectacularly fucked up, as he's a fucking moron and instead of retiring to enjoy his ill gotten gains he's back promoting himself to, no doubt, get another well paid job where he'll again fuck up as he's a cretin.

A bit of self publicization and good networking skills will get you far

He didn't, the reason Torres was sold for £50m was because that was the release clause in his contract.

We rejected all offers until the £50m was met. Comolli had nothing to do with that. The man who put the clause in the contract should get the credit.

The principle of a DOF at LFC was, and is, a good idea.

Comolli was the wrong man with a franco and londoncentric knowledge base inappropriate for our club. Wenger was and is scathing about him. At Spurs he did some good things, but as part of a very experienced management team.

The nexus of Comolli and KK was doomed. What could KK hope to learn from him?

We have now veered from KK who didn’t need a DOF ( and probably should have had the role himself) to a man who desperately does need a DOF in Brendan, but does not have one.

And this is what happens when you have owners who know nothing about football, the success of the club comes down to chance, not judgement.
