Waylon Jennings was supposed to on that plane. He was playing bass for Buddy at the time but JP Richardson(Big Bopper) had the flu and asked Waylon to give up his seat for him. So Waylon took the bus, apparently he felt guilty about it for years and rarely brought it up as when he told Buddy Holly he was taking the bus Buddy said 'hope the bus breaks down" Waylon replied "Hope the plane crashes".

Richie Valens was also on that plane. 17 years old when he died in that fateful crash and he’d already had 4 hit singles.

The day the music died indeed !

If you haven't seen the film 'La Bamba' then you should watch it. Basically a Biographical film about Richie Valens but touches on that desperate day and how they all perished. Great film.

Buddy was only 21! Think of the amount of songs of his that you know! And they're all so different. Amazing artist.

A lot of that first wave of rockers were left behind by all the changes in the sixties, but I always think that Buddy Holly and Eddie Cochran might have remained active and relevant. They had the talent  - as did others - but those two were also gifted songwriters, innovators, eclectic and restlessly creative.
