Which he conveniently picked up between Thursday morning and last night.

Yeah, it's a well known fact that calf strains take at least six weeks to gestate. It's looking increasingly like a disastrous signing (particularly for Benitez himself), even if he ends up being brilliant in the years to come, but there's nothing to say that he's not injured yet.

Whats the official line as to why he wasn't in the squad ?

I'm beginning to think this is going to be another one of those "I didn't sign him' date=' the club did" moments. One thing is certain it wont be Rafa's fault if it goes tits up.[/quote']

He's picked up a Calf Strain, was at Manchester Airport this Morning booked on a flight to Munich to have treatment, due to the adverse Weather never travelled, trying again tomorrow.

Somethings not right. Waste of fucking money.

everything is right, he is doing the same as every other season in his career.

he has had a league career since 2003/4 while on loan in serie b - so this is his 7th season. He's managed just 107 appearances in that time. 34 of of those appearances were outside the top flight in his 1st year. 43 of his 107 appearances are as substitute. He has never been involved in more than 20 top flight league matches in 1 season, including sub appearances. He is exactly what anyone who looked at his career stats would know he is - a crock who hasn't got a run of games in him.

I don't know how anyone is surprised the lad is injured all the time. The only shame is we never tried to play him while he was fit, as history suggests, like with aurellio, you should get the games in while you can as another part of his body will fall off while he's walking down the road to get a pint of milk. if we'd have played him, we could have maybe got 8/10 appearances out of him by now and got him on course for his regular 14 league appearance's (including sub) per season.

This signing is beginning to make the Robbie Keane debacle look like the transfer coup of the decade.

Yeah, I can see Rafa saying that to a few people all right and it getting back to a friend of a friend, etc.

Your final line is exactly what that is.

he's either totally fucking shit or just made of Quavers.

Possibly both.

Either way, his signing is just yet another perfectly acceptable sackable offence imo.

Well, I was slapped down on here for saying precisely that in the summer, but for me it is bordering on gross misconduct and negilgence. Arsenal were cited £12m for Aquilani in the summer of 2008, but his injuries meant that Wenger felt they could not proceed. He then hardly plays 2008-9. So how on earth do we agree a fee rising to over 20million in the summer of 2009? Rafa has clearly never seen him play (nor indeed had Roma fans for three seasons...), so what criteria was he using to make this purchase? And how much is Macia paid by our club? How much would he have been paid for facilitating this deal? Lots and lots of unanswered, and probably unanswerable questions here, but in any other business, a manager making a catastrophic financial decision like that would be sacked on the spot for misconduct.

The signing of Aquilani is either incompetent (and that wouldn't suprose me given our manager's increasingly erratic behaviour and his reliance on Macia and his network) or there is somehting more sinister behind it. I guess the truth will eventually out... but if I were the owner i wouldn't give him a penny more, would remove the scouting team forthwith, and would insist on bringing someone in to manage all future transfers. If Rafa doesn't like it, tough, but he's shown that he cannot spend money wisely or responsibly, and I do think the Aquilani saga shows he has lost his ability to think rationally

And if he turns out, in time, to be a really good signing?

Alternatively - why not have actually signed someone who could play this year, monitor Aquilani's return to fitness, and sign him in the summer of 2010? What's the point of paying him to be injured? I'm afraid the line that "a London doctor told us he'd be fit in a month" is utterly irresponsible - a/ this wasn't the opinion of the Roma staff who had him as out until December and b/ neither was this the opinion of the Liverpool medical staff.

Roma snapped off our hands at the price offered, which was £8m more than they asked from Arsenal the previous year.

I'm sorry UEM, but does there not come a point when it becomes impossible to defend every action and decision the manager is making? Do you honestly think, given what we KNOW of Aquilani, that this signing has made sense? Not just financially but given the ALonso-size hole we needed to fill? And does the role of Macia in all this not concern you, not even one tiny iota?? I do wonder what Rafa has to do for you to accept that maybe, just maybe, he's capable of making a mistake?

The Yanks could sack Rafa for gross misconduct on this, and I honestly don't think he'd have much come-back.

So, me not saying that he should be sacked for signing Aquilani means I'm apologising again?

Terribly sorry (See I did it again)

And in regards to the advice given to the club by the specialist, are they now supposed to disregard the opinion of one of the most reputable ankle surgeons in the country?

Or maybe I'm just not being hysterical for the sake of it

And that bit in bold, wasn't aware of that, in fact, it sounds more like mischief making be a disgruntled ex-member of staff with mates in the press.

Although I did hear something which is more or less the polar opposite, but as I've found, it's best keeping certain things to yourself and your mates.

Well the fans marched on the training ground when it became clear he was leaving for us. I've also heard that the manager threatened to walk if he was forced to sell him.

Arsenal were reported to be offering £12M for Aquilani back in May '08.

Arsenal linked with Roma's Alberto Aquilani - Telegraph

I thought that was what Roma where asking, not what Arsenal were offering?

And he didn't move because?

I still remember Everton offering £13,000,000 for Alan Shearer before he moved to Newcastle

That report also states that he's a left sided midfielder

It also doesn't have an author, unless someone has changed thier name by deed poll to "Telegraph staff and agencies"
