Joni Mitchell

Sam Brown

Annie Lennox

Eva Cassidy

They would by my personal favourites. Recently had a listen to Amy McDonald's stuff too, and while she's not yet in that league of the four I've mentioned she's pretty good and a damn sight better than most of the female 'talent' out there at the moment.

I'm too lazy to go all the way through this thread, so I'll just say:-

Aretha Franklin

Lena Horne

Nina Simone

Etta James

Rosario

Edith Piaf

Joan Baez

Emmylou Harris

Beyonce (sometimes - when she manages not to do the overwrought shite that every fucker does these days)

Dusty Springfield

Joan Armatrading

Sinead O'Connor

... and probably some more when I think of them. (Like Dionne Warwick and Nelly Furtado, for example).

and Fergie and Nicole Scherzinger were good on slashs solo album, niether deserve to be mentioned in the sme beath as the likes of Franklin and Joplin though

YouTube - Beautiful Dangerous - Slash feat. Fergie

YouTube - Baby Can't Drive - Slash feat. Alice Cooper, Nicole Scherzinger, Steve Adler and Flea

The shouts for Franklin, Springfield and Simone are all very good ones. There's someone that's not been mentioned that I think is easily up there with them and, for me, can be argued to be better. I know I'm not the only admirer and I fully expect some support from the Oxton Soul Machine when he arrives.

Mary J Blige.

Note for note she can live with any of that warbley nonsense that seems to make people "good singers" these days but she takes it to another level and brings so much more to the table. She does power and raw energy and can also do the gentle, fragile stuff. She's boss.

I'd also choose the French singer Camille over a vast amount of other female singers if I could only ever listen to one female voice. When she sings it's like getting in a warm bath with Monica Bellucci.

I was listening to Camille's album today, Le Fil, and it made me think of this thread. Pretty scandalous that I didn't put a clip up when I was giving her the big sell last time. That's now sorted. I'd encourage anyone who has never heard of her to listen to the clips beneath. She's got talent.
