You laugh? My auntie is a very good singer no word of a lie here she sings huge songs perfectly Aretha, Lennox, Dion, Houston Carey and More i mean perfectly but she is shit scared of doing anything by Anastacia she went mad at me at a gig because i chanted her to do Anastacia. Ask any Vocalist and they will tell you the same. Anastacia is tremendous.

Booted.

I was just having an argument about this with my 16 year old nephew the other day.

I'd noticed that he had Janelle Monae's The Arch Android on his iPod and I complimented him on his (surprisingly excellent) taste.

Knowing that he's also got a thing for Aguilera, I commented that Monae could sing Aguilera's knickers off, any day. Easy.

Anyway, his spunk glands playing havoc with his common sense he wasn't having any of it.

Aguilera, I explained, whilst having a great voice fell into the same trap as Dion, Houston, Carey and all of these song destroying over singing uber-warblers.

Monae, on the other hand, has a great tone, great control, great taste, and has an edge that Aguilera couldn't even begin to fathom.

Listening to my own iPod right now, two others leap out : Norah Jones and Ella Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald's voice is just treacle man, wonderful and thick and resonant. Her duet with Louis Armstrong on "Cheek to Cheek" might actually frighten many kids of today, such is the incredible otherworldly tone !

I think Norah Jones is a great singer. Again, she has just such a great breathy, rich toneful voice.

Her live albums in Paris and New Orleans at The House of Blues are phenomenal. I don't know whether there was any post production (hope not), but she just flat out nails every single song. Absolutely perfect, and she makes it sound so effortless.

One other characteristic that all 3 of these women seem to possess, and (to me at least) comes across quite clearly in their music is a sense of enjoyment, fun and love for what they do.

With Aguilera and her diva mates I just don't hear that. At all.

Most people have mentioned the obvious and some not so, but I will throw this name in to the mix, just because of one song.

Great Gig In the Sky which was sung by Clare Torry.

Other (I believe) honurable mentions for being great singers are:

Sam Brown

Isobell Campbell

Tina Dico

Sia Furler

Sophie Baker

Rebecca Ferguson (oh I went there)

Aretha. Control and abandonment, the deepest sadness and the most joyous exuberance.

Ella. Timing, swing, class.

Five class Brits...

Liz Fraser. Mad as a wet hen. Glorious.

Mica Paris. Smoky, creamy, chocolatey, gorgeous. It's all in the tone.

Christine Collister. Who? Those who know, know.

Eddi Reader. Expansive of chin, good of heart, and generous of spirit. Almost brought the Scottish Parliament building down minutes after it had been built.

Beth Gibbons. A facsimilie, but pretty good one.

So many great singers out there - I've scratched the surface here.

Edit - I;ve just realised I've already contributed to this thread. Alzheimers ahoy!
