Best female singer ever.

Joni Mitchell is the greatest female vocalist of all time.

Ever.

Nobody even comes remotely close.

i was going to go with Franklin as well, but to be fair there are loads of great soul vocalists. Nobody can do what Joni Mitchell can do.

Mitchell gets my vote, not only because her voice does things it shouldnt have any right to, but also because the quality of her songwriting remains unparalled.

see Kate Bush.

Nonce sense.

I've seen many a very high quality Kate Bush impression. I've never seen anybody even get CLOSE to a reasonable attempt at The Mitchell.

Even if you don't like her songs - as that's totally personal - nobody can touch her range, her tone, her effortless switch from major to minor, her breathing, her switch between whole octaves in one note...

She's just the best ever.

It's not even close. She's from aother planet altogether.

I forgot Gibbons.

I have brought dishonour upon the tribe.

I must leave now.

Fuck Gibbons (there's the missing link, right there), I forgot Fraser. How the fuck did that happen? Mica Paris has a fantastic set of pipes, and Sam Brown, and the other big boned aging soul divas. The canadian rug muncher with the patsy cline obsession whose name escapes me is a really fine singer too.

Karen Carpenter

Repped. That's a great call!

I would also have to agree with Eva Cassidy and Nina Simone.

Another one to add would be Norah Jones ... much more recent than some of the classic choices but she has a stunning bluesy voice. I've always loved her version of Hank Williams' song 'Cold Cold Heart'.
