Black & White Films

Christ... this is impossible.

The Third Man has to be mentioned.

The Apartment is one of the best (if far from the funniest) comedies of all time. Likewise, Harvey. One from each of the two greatest actors of all time for you there.

The Misfits is possibly Monroe's finest hour (bar the Seven Year Itch, which is the only DVD I've watched three times back to back and still been laughing) and it's one of Huston's best too.

The Kid is damn near perfect as a film.

Being a Haneke nut I'll mention The White Ribbon.

and finally, as with my foreign films post, I'll end with the daddy of all family dramas, Tokyo Story.

Great to see so many going for Night of the Hunter.

Last Year At Marienbad great call also, FH. I'd add La Notte to that.

Sweet Smell of Success

Touch of Evil

A Tale of Two Cities

The Front Page

Some Like It Hot

Sunset Boulevard

White Heat

To Kill A Mockingbird

A Kind of Loving

Goodbye Mr Chips

Saturday Night Sunday Morning is my favourite film.

My favourite black & white film is "Night Of The Living Dead"

But I do also like Laurel & Hardy, Harold Lloyd.

Other mentions:

"Angels With Dirty Faces"

"Schindler's List"

"Psycho"

"Raging Bull"

"Man Bites Dog"

"Sin City"

"Some Like It Hot"

"Twelve Angry Men"

Good shout.

Laurel and Hardy any day over the Marx Brothers.

It should read the Marx Brother because it was all Groucho.

not movies as such, but I love the old British transport films (BTF) from the 1950s, short film/documentaries, mainly about railway and road transport.

my dad got me into them, got most now on DVD, I like the old commentaries and just the general way of life.

Sweet Smell of Success

Top shout that, I found it on at 1:30 on a Saturday just as I was heading down to... a green place with lots of people and a little bit of net... ended up sacking that off to sit in alone and watch a film. The dialogue is possibly the sharpest I have ever heard.

The director was an Ealing alumnus, which reminds me...

The Ladykillers

The Lavender Hill Mob

Kind Hearts and Coronets

Alec Guiness was brilliant.

You're right, I thought it was a coloursied (after the fact) one (like that awful version of Some Like It Hot), but checking my DVD, you are correct. Shot in colour. Unusual for Ealing.

Anyway, here's a treat (for some... maybe):

1933... incredible ingenuity.
