I saw murmurs of Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth last night.

We looked at him before he went to Bournemouth, 24, 6’2, home grown, can play centre back & left back, contract expires in 2024.

Literally zero idea how he’s done at Bournemouth.

Think Spurs are looking at him as well.

So just to recap the Saudis have bought

Koulibaliy, Mendy and Kante off Chelsea who were all underperforming or injury prone players who they wanted shifted from the squad and the ephemeral St Maximim from Newcastle.

From us they bought our club captain and first choice defensive midfielder, have bid for our best attacking player (Salah) and have tried to destabalise Ibrahim Konate and Luis Diaz with much of that attempted transfer activity occurring prior to our games with Chelsea and Newcastle.

Hmm...

Aaaahhhh new player buzzzz

The defences problems came from a poor midfield. When the midfield gets going it’ll all click into place.

(…right?)

A lot of our defensive issues are down to ball achingly shit tactics when it comes to defending. Could be made worse by injuries in defence so we play midfielders there instead.

Apart from we are still lacking a world class number six, a CB and a proper right back.

This isn’t championship manager. You don’t do that level of a rebuild in one window if you want the right players in both ability and mentality. If you just spunk your money everywhere singing 10 first teamers then you end up like Chelsea.

I think longer term, Gravenberch will be the 6. We still have Thiago to come back who can play that role, who despite his injury issues, is a world class footballer.

Centre back is preferable, which if we get, then Gomez can cover at RB.

I dunno if the number six thing (a term I've only ever heard this summer) is in Klopp's footballing vocabulary. He seems to want players who can turn defence into attack rather than a stopper who can give it. Maybe I'm wrong.

In general he's always seemed to place low importance on a high calibre of defenders in general, save for Virg, seems like the whole concept bores him.

What does "world class" even mean?

Endo, Bajcetic, Thiago and (at a push) Mac Allister are all more than capable of doing a job there, provided that the other midfielders are quality (which, this season, they are).

Depends of the kind of side he wants us to be.

If you want to be a possession side then you can afford a Pirlo/Frenkie De Jong style player who dictates play and controls tempo. At the moment we're a really vertical side who tries to get it from front to back quickly and then compress the play into the opposition half because it helps us counter-press so a defensive monster would gives us a security.

Yeah, I think he'd get a chuckle out of the simplicity that we view the game with. He clearly wants a fairly rounded footballer in every position.

A really good summer’s work.

No real losses at all there outside of Milner, who I'd have kept even in a coaching role, and Fabinho (and I'm pretty alone in missing him on here). Good window. Szobozslai, who I knew nothing about, looks particularly special.
