I used to love the World cup as a lad but now I couldn't give a fuck.

I'll probably still watch a load of games but it has been so diluted that I couldn't be arsed investing any time into it.

It's awful, isn't it? It really was a phenomenal tournament to enjoy when there wasn't wall-to-wall football on TV all the time, especially when we were kids.

Yea, it's awful now.

I think the 2002 World Cup was the last one I was in any way invested in. Even that was a bit meh in comparison to the 1986 and 1990 tournaments.

Wales have released their world cup song/video. The singer/songwriter is an ex Welsh Nationalist who's done a bit of time in Cardiff Prison for terrorism (as shown in vid).

It's in Welsh so the journos at the beeb/mail/telegraph will  remain oblivious to the mandatory dig at Margaret Thatcher.

Its a yes from me

Here it is. It means "We are still here" in English, which we probably won't be after the first round.

It’s a yes from me too.

Thanks for posting this but, for the record, Dafydd Iwan went to jail  for protesting/ civil disobedience rather than terrorism. He might have terrorised a few road signs though.

Yes. He was looked at as a terrorist of that time. I believe he was a member of Plaid Cymru who at that time were seen as a little more controversial than today.

As for the song/video I like it. It's definitely got a bit socialist/nationalist feel and although I'm not a Welsh Nationalist myself I like they've been brave enough to go a bit leftfeild with the song content and that they've also chosen to pick a song sung in Welsh.

30/40 years ago, Welsh rugby was seen as the “home” of Welsh language culture in sport and the football side was a bit looked down upon as it was very English orientated. It’s amazing how this has now flipped around - football taking the lead on protecting and promoting Welsh while rugby slowly but steadily converts itself from a Welsh working class sport to some weird middle class hybrid.

98 for me. 14 years old, I probably knew every single player in the tournament from non-stop reading the pre tournament brochures etc and the sticker album. I was obsessed with that tournament.

Yes I agree. Fair play to the Welsh football fans, they've definitely got a scene going on.

It's just a shame for them this world cup is where it is imo.

Sounds like a Soviet anthem.

It does. Proper protest song..

"but we are still here, but we are still here, go damn your Maggie Thatchers cuz we are still here"

Unfortunately we probably won't be there after the first round.
