I think it is only now becoming apparent how many UK businesses were using free movement of labour to treat their employees like paid slaves. Sports direct, Amazon, Uber, etc all relying on the huge wage differentials between western and eastern Europe to impose horrific working conditions and minimal job insecurity whilst their owners became billionaires. Now they’re are bleating they can’t get people in the UK to do their shit jobs.

I think it was obvious then and it's proving obvious even to the skeptical now..

O,Connor from the Ft has been writing about the correlation between cheap labour and employers for a while, she's the journalist who wrote about the sweat shops in Leicester. Shes no lefty/brexiteer but was rightly nominated for the top journalistic awards this year,

People buy £3 t shirts in Primark and don’t consider where it comes from.

True but a lot of these clothes go for a bit more than that.

When we re join the EU they'll stop all that like they did before.

Who on Earth could have foreseen that?

A bit of overtime for our haulage workers, good on them. Its not compulsory because drivers are in a strong enough position to tell some haulage boss from Tesco to go whistle.

I thought you'd enjoy low paid workers being wanted and valued Angry. If its the safety aspect you're pushing I wouldn't lose too much sleep, they won't be driving 24/7 and foreign haulage drivers were the cause of a fair percentage of road traffic accidents. I'd bet on our roads actually now being safer. it'll be interesting to gauge the reaction to the ideal of re flooding the market/roads with a load of Latvian lorry drivers on doorsteps at the next election.

So you're happy being on a motorway with haulage drivers who might not have rested in the last 14/15 hours?

Well, I'll be happy for you to take part in that experiment.

The head of the Haulage Association has said drivers pay has risen substantially since the shortage. Good.

As for possible shortage of food in shops, also good. The country might benefit from a period of rationing, might make us all appreciate what we have and the people who work hard to give it to us. Be interesting if warehouse workers etc at large supermarkets who are on minimum wage decided nows the time to strike. Havn't the likes of Asda made huge profits during the pandemic?
