Lack of pace and maybe general fitness level yes. More important I think was lack of consistency, and the mental strength to deliver good performances every week. Also his decision making was quite bad, kept giving the ball away in the wrong positions.

He was a decent enough fotballer on his day, but very far from a top player.

I think the Rafa thing was because he knew he'd sell him before he ever played for him.

 

And Hodgson gave him a decent twilight to his career at Fulham. Somehow managed to stave off relegation, and played in a European final were it took Forlan at his absolute peak to beat them in extra time.

 

He's a bit of a helmet as a pundit, but he knows he had the greatest days of his career at the club he's worshipped all his life.

he's talked about the rafa thing just recently. he blames himself now for not fighting for his place and says rafa was right. but he said at the time he hated rafa.
