The people who make these choices have money in those banks and not children in comprehensive schools. Choices eh.

Sexual abuse is no respecter of class or money, Anny, though. Although, I do agree with your point that crimes against property can seem to attract far higher sentences than crimes against the person

Jesus, just seen the footage of Freddie Starr yesterday. If he's not playing to the gallery then he's one seriously disturbed man.

Looks like the older Biff Tannen having fucked up on ecstasy and Rohypnol. Talk about gone to seed.

The problem with the law (apart from it being an ass) is that he is sentenced according to when his crimes were committed, and not the current day. So back in the swinging 60's and 70's with free love and promiscuity, fiddling with an under aged girl or boy, wasn't seen as the heinous crime it is today.

So the sentencing was quite mild, for this type of offence. The quicker that statute can be changed to reflect this the better, but there are plenty that argue that sentencing of crimes should reflect what sentence was available when the offence occurred.

Crimes of a similar nature committed in this day and age attract a far higher sentence, and better reflect our moral outrage at such perverted acts.

Its not the 'moral outrage' that bothers me its the fact that it ruins lives; not only those of the direct victims (dont like that word) but potentially those of their family and subsequent children and can result in a lifelong mental illness, vulnerabilty to further abuse, poor educational achievement, poor parenting...The list of potential harms is almost endless

You're right, wrong choice of words, moral outrage is those of us looking for the outside, to those involved whose lives it ruins then you're right. The fact remains however that the law punishes them based on the sentences at that time, and kiddy fiddling whilst it still ruined peoples lives, they were ignored. Only when as a nation, our voices of disdain grew, does it become something that is repugnant and the victim is recognised more than it was previously.

He won't get bummed. Prison tends to be as bad as Twitter when they have a celebrity in there. He'll use his contacts to help a few of them and in return he'll be looked after, and when be gets out no doubt there'll be a book in the offing.
