I bow to your superior knowledge of footballs. Plus I'm sure sports medicine has advanced a lot in six years.

*Sigh* thats better. Was a bit concerned there for a minute. Glad to know he'll be back to his best next season.

ShoePiss' knowledge of footballs is legendary. Most kind of balls, actually.

Balls.

I think it depends on the opposition. A three of Spearing Adam and Henderson is probably the safest option and the extra body in there might make up for the loss of Lucas' presence, in the sense of how he bosses so many games these days. Might be interesting to see a two of Adam and Henderson in some games though. Neither of them is dominant but both can put a foot in to some extent. I mean, it wouldn't be like having Aquilani and Meireles in there for example. On top of that both can play and Henderson has plenty of energy and could be the grafter in that pair. Obviously when Gerrard gets back he will become involved too but, until then, I reckon that's how we should go.

And he has sustained an injury to his ACL, making his age more or less irrelevant. There's a very good chance that he'll never again reach the level he's been at in recent months. A Djibril Cisse style leg break would have been preferable in that respect.

1. Henderson is not a defensive mid.

2. The ACL is no longer a career threatening injury. Also FSP did his in for us and went on to have his best years later in Spain.

3. A leg break is not better - dont talk shite.

Don't get why everyone is writing Lucas off.Players have made comebacks before.

Jerry Rice can back from a ACL tear and cracked patella late in his career.

I don't think everyone is writing him off & obviously I wish him all the best he's been brilliant for us. As I said earlier I think if anyone can come back from this Lucas can, seems like a determined individual.

Sounds like a bad one though and I must admit I've gone from a 'we'll be fine with what we have' stance yesterday/this morning to a 'maybe we need to look at getting someone in even if its only as an insurance policy' tonight.

No disrespect to our other CMs & I agree Spearing has absolutely earned his chance. I also have a feeling Jonjo could develop into a great DM but I dunno, I guess I'm just gutted for Lucas at this point.

Team really has been building up a great run though & the best result all round is we can keep that going with what we've got. That would be the best outcome for me, but tbh the (at least potential) seriousness of the injury keeps niggling at me & make me think we need to have a sniff around in January just in case.

Pains me to say it, but there ya go.

I am no surgeon or doctor, but i thought a fucked ACL was about the worst that could happen to a footballer in terms of relatively common injuries.

As far as i knew the knee will never go back to 100%, where as when you break a leg, unless of pretty unusual complications it will heal and be as strong as before.

We play five games before the window even opens. Why not see how we do before we decide to blow silly money on some FM flavour of the month?

Absolutely. Fine with that approach & ideally we won't have to buy anyone.

Wish we had a better handle on the timing of Stevie's return - he'll be inspirational when he comes back.

Its just the longer term implications of Lucas' injury for the specialised DM position he had developed thats pissing me off, both for the lad himself and for the club.

Anyway, signing off now and going for a piss up - we still have Kenny in charge & he sure as hell knows a lot more about this stuff than I do.

This is the only thing worth reading in any of your posts on this thread and it is still wrong (any study that was done in 2005 that used players performance post injury would have put it those injuries closer to ten years ago) - and you meant it sarcastically. Top drawer.

A broken bone is 'better' than injuring a tendon or ligament.

With Lucas done for the season it's

Spearing

Henderson

Adam

Gerrard

Shelvey

Aquilani

Can't see them recalling Aquilani unless it really goes to shit. Adam and Gerrard for me (when fit) Adam playing the Alonso role and Gerrard in the whole in front.

For a 5 man midfield I suppose it'll be Henderson (his time to shine) sitting in front of the back 4.

how often did this actually happen?

the way I remember it was mostly alonso, hamann and gerrard then it was alonso, sissoko and gerrard and then alonso, mascherano and gerrard.

Ok I'm gonna try to help you out here -

I bow to your superior knowledge of footballs. Not sarcastic - I've no doubt someone from Portland Oregon knows a shitload more about the NFL and tbh possibly the premiership than me

Plus I'm sure sports medicine has advanced a lot in six years. Not sarcastic, I've no doubt it has, certainly hope so

Right, thats the last time I'm gonna explain myself - you're gonna have to try to keep up on your own from now on.

Listen lads, people were asking about how serious the injury was so I did a bit of a Google and posted what I found. More than any other bastard did.

*Harrumph*

*Stomps off in a huff*

Spearing won't let us down. He should be the one to hold it together - snappy and gets his tackles in. He's like a little Jack Russell terrier on the pitch for me. If Kenny thinks it's a three man in the middle job then Adam and Henderson will be fine with Spearing (assuming Stevie unfit) and Shelvey to be the sub. Obviously when Stevie is fit he goes to the top of the class.

No need to buy anyone for Central midfield. We have enough.
