RAFA: FIT KEWELL WILL BE LIKE NEW SIGNING

Paul Eaton 06 October 2005

Rafael Benitez looked forward to the imminent return of Harry Kewell to the Reds' squad and admitted: "Having him fit again will be like signing a new player."

Kewell enjoyed a 25 minute run-out for the reserves last week and is expected to play some part in Australia's international friendly with Jamaica this weekend.

The Liverpool midfielder hasn't kicked a ball for the Reds' first team since picking up an injury in the Champions League final but he's now well on the road to recovery and could be involved when Blackburn visit Anfield in the Premiership.

"We are waiting for Harry because he can be an important player for us," said Benitez. "Having him fit again will improve our squad.

"Every day he is feeling a bit better. He's away with Australia this weekend and then we'll have to see if he can be involved against Blackburn. It may be too soon but we'll have to wait and see.

"When he's back with us it'll be like signing a new player because he has a lot of quality. He is a different kind of player to what we have. He can beat people, cross balls into the area, shoot and also score goals himself. He has been out a long time so he will be hungry to get back.

"He will bring ability, experience and energy to our team and I'm looking forward to having him available again."

I fucking love Hary Kewell, he will come good, he is one of the most talented players in the squad and much better than anything we have on the wing. A genuine winger who can on his day be absolutely amazing.

Word. I am with Rashid on this one. He WILL come good. i know he will.

What's the betting Australia break him again?

That was my first thought.

IF and that's a bloody big if we can get him playing to his full potential then theres no doubt he's a quality player, but we seem to have been saying this for ages.

I really think this is his last season at the club.

People sure do like to make bold predictions based on little evidence around here.

I think we badly need Kewell in the side right now too, but to suggest that he will come back and play at the level he did early on at Leeds is a bit ridiculous. He has never once hit that kind of form for us, so why should he start now? The best we can hope for is for him to hit the kind of form he had in his first season here, and even that was only good because of the goals he got.

Agreed.

The Harry Kewell of the his first six months here would make a big difference to us. Can't see it happening though.

If he ( and it`s a big IF ) at last is fit there`s no reason why he cant recapture his form of the six first months here. Since then he has hardly played a number of games in succession withouth injuries. W can also ask the question why he did`nt have these operations at least a year ago, cos those injuries has bothered him ever since he signed!

Worry not. He'll declare himself fit for the friendly, before asking to come off after 10 minutes.

Cahill should play the whole 90 though. Love the way Moyes was telling everyone he wouldn't be joining up with the Auystralian squad. Now he's begging them not to play him. Yup, really put your foot down there Davey. Gus probably wondered who the fuck it was phoning him.

Benitez's high hopes for Harry Oct 6 2005

By Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ today gave the all-clear for Harry Kewell to play for Australia this weekend, and said he hopes to have the winger back in his senior squad within a fortnight.

Story continues

The Liverpool boss has called on everyone at Anfield to give the Aussie a 'fresh start' as he bids to put his injury troubles behind him.

And he's also called on Kewell to show the 'hunger' to reassert his credentials on Merseyside.

Kewell has much to prove on his return, but with Benitez desperate for more options on the wing he's made it clear the left midfielder is key to his plans.

Kewell hasn't featured since breaking down during the Champions League Final. That was the climax to an 18-month battle with a groin injury which resulted in surgery over the summer.

Benitez knows he hasn't seen the best from his number seven, but he's in forgiving mood.

"Harry is a fantastic player and we need him," insisted the Anfield boss. "I want to see Harry doing what he's capable of, beating defenders and getting plenty of crosses into the box. That's what we need and that's why he could be like a new signing.

"Maybe we'll need to be a bit more patient with him when he's back into the team if he's not completely match fit, but we will give him a couple of games before he plays in the Premiership.

"He could feature in the Champions League against Anderlecht, or in the Carling Cup against Crystal Palace. We can use him then. If we use him little by little he can find his way back, but he must also be hungry to succeed. That's important, too."

Australia coach Guus Hiddink says he wants to play Kewell for part of the friendly against Jamaica on Sunday.

Benitez says as long as the circumstances are right, he'll have no complaints.

Story continues

"I've spoken to Harry and Guus Hiddink," Benitez added.

"They know Harry is not 100 per cent fit and we must be careful with the situation, but he's played 30 minutes for the reserves.

"He can play, but it depends on the intensity of the game. It shouldn't be a big risk if the game isn't so competitive and the manager is in control. The physios and the doctor will analyse him before and during the game.

"I think he's recovered from his injury now and it's just a question of match fitness. It's a question of time."

At least the friendly is in England, that limits the chances of Austrailia 'breaking' him, I think that he will come good, I think being booed off in the CL final, and the fact that nobody wanted him in the summer will have been the kick up the arse that he needed.

I love the optimism. Let's hope Harry gets back to his very best. Normally thinking of Harry makes me feel angry. To those of you who feel the same, it helps reminding yourself of the way he threw himself into a headball challenge against Sol Campell and Toure at Anfield last season. As you might recall that suicidal challenge created just enough space for Boy Mellor. Give us that attitude week in week out Harry!

People forget that Kewell started his Liverpool career superbly. He's been off the boil since Christmas 04 with injuries and form. He was probably gutted because his missus was crushed by a chimney. ;)

That's why people are so hard on him. They know he can do it, and just get frustrated when he doesn't.

If we use him little by little he can find his way back...

Thats the key.

Let him play for an hour for the ressies in their next game, then use him as a sub for the blackburn and fulham games before starting him against Palace.

We seem to have rushed him back in the past and its never done him any favours. We need to make sure he's really fit before throwing him in at the deep end again.

A fully fit, confident and hungry Kewell would be brilliant for us. I've given him a lot of stick since he joined us, but as far as I'm concerned he's starting with a clean slate this season.
