Not that odd when you consider Carroll and Downing were also signed due to 6 months of half decent/good performances.  We really don't make any sense if the transfer market.

On the topic of Lovren, he's unredeemable for me.  Get out while we still can.  Flog him off to anyone that will have him for £12m in January.  For all his faults Rafa was really good at admitting when he was wrong about a player and getting rid of them immediately before their value fell too far if he could find a buyer (Robbie Keane perfect example).  Brendan needs to take a page from that book.  If we hang onto Lovren for 2 seasons then we'll end up selling for under £10m and paying him £8m in wages.
