I want to recommend a (short) book I just read (well, listened to an audio book of) Twilight of Democracy: The Seductive Lure of Authoritarianism by Anne Appleboum mainly on the rise of right wing populism in Europe.

It is interesting because it is written from the right wing perspective by a person who knew many of the important actors and ideologues personally in their earlier ideological incarnations, so it reads like an extended magazine cover story, rather than a dry academic book (although you sometimes wish for more facts and less anecdotal profiling).

Insightful look at what is going on in Poland, Hungary, Spain, UK with Johnson and Cummings and a little bit of Trump, mainly through extended profiles of some of the people behind the scenes, an attempt of explanation where did the split on the right come from when populist authoritarians broke away from traditional anti-communist conservatives and classic liberals and why, mechanisms and role of lies and conspiracy theories  and so on.

Will check that on my reading list.not long finished the Nazi & The Psychiatrist by Jack El-Hai, really interesting on young US shrink who was first to go into Nuremberg and assess Göring, Hess, et al. He spent along time in assessment trying to understand what marked these people out from the rest of the population.

‘Currently reading “The People” by Selina Todd, excellent history of the working class 1910 - 2010, highlights what the problem is with the current Labour Party, and how the “centre” have reverted to type of the days before the Labour Party was established.

A French right-wing magazine has been criticised across the political spectrum in France for depicting a black socialist MP, Danièle Obono, as a slave.

The article in Valeurs actuelles accused Africans of colluding in slavery, and had a sketch of Ms Obono with an iron collar around her neck.

Prime Minister Jean Castex said it was a "revolting publication".

The magazine apologised to Ms Obono but denied the article was racist.

I forgot that France has a prime minister

Regarding the rest, don’t give the cunts the oxygen of publicity

Just got in to a 'minor disagreement' with a fucking idiot.

If anyone knows the Harrow Rd in London they'll know it's a crazy mixing pot.

Anyhow's this dickhead has hung a load of fascist flags from his balcony, whilst blasting out hip hop and wearing a MAGA hat, no I don't see any problems with any of the inherent contradictions either. He's trying to intimidate people and being generally aggressive. I give him the wanker sign and call him a thick cunt, I've got the kids with me so can't really get in to it, but we exchanged pleasantries. I phoned the police and told them he was displaying flags from banned organisations, he'll get the fight he wants before the nights out.

This is getting a little too close to home now, in a literal sense I've not seen before, I've obviously seen the flag of SG and the UJ on thick cunts front lawns for a while, but I've not seen insignia on display outside of marches.

This is the manifestation of the government's use and emboldenment of idiots and it's now getting to a critical point where fascist beliefs are becoming mainstream and our fucking governments are actively playing up to it.

Didn't we say 'never again' the last time...

A lot of dissent being manufactured, by Bannon, to see democracy fall.

What he intends to replace it with, no fucking idea.

You can see the QAnon lunatics gaining traction, putting everything down to the 'deep state'.  Trump feeding this, calling the integrity of the Nov election into question already, and there's a good chance he will refuse to step down when he loses and he will blame the 'deep state' for rigging the election.  All of this is geared towards that.

Biden will win, but I'll also put money on Biden getting bumped off by a far right lunatic who thinks he works for the 'deep state'.

We desperately, desperately need to be in the EU right now.

Don’t worry, the Germans will come to your rescue... ah no, they’re banned from nukes, this time the baddies have all the best toys. Lee Perry may get to see Armagideon yet.

You needn't have bothered ringing the police. I'm sure he would have been dealt some justice there eventually.

Lukashenko:

“[I will] not allow everything we created with the people, with those generations, to be destroyed,” he said. He did acknowledge that he may have overstayed his welcome after 26 years in power – “I may have sat in the president’s chair a little too long” – but he made it clear he would not bow to demands from the street.

The Belarusian leader, who has lost legitimacy among much of the Belarusian population and is looking to Russia for support, is due to travel to Moscow in the coming days for a key meeting with Vladimir Putin, and much of his messaging over the past fortnight has appeared aimed at the Russian president rather than his own people.
