I have never been proud to be an American. Ever. Not once. Nope, zero. I can safely say that I am proud as fuck today. It's not about getting a democrat in the White House, although that's good, too. It's about the fact that this election proved that America and Americans, when faced with two options, actually CAN make the correct choice. We can. We put a black man into the White House. I'm fucking gobsmacked. Words cannot describe the complete and total elation that I've been experiencing for the last 12-16 hours. We fucking did it.

It is a momemtous event and a large majority of the American people should feel proud in what they have done over the last 24 hours. However, I note with interest that the vast majority of the southern states went for McCain; right now, from South Carolina to Mississippi, high powered rifles are being oiled and a thousand grassy knolls are being sown. I fear some good ol'boys just might feel the need to exercise their right to bear arms when the new president decides to pay their state a visit.

He can only get 'debatable' credit for the economic growth at the end of the Bush Administration/beginning of his Administration.

He cut the fat off Government spending(Defense sector, space sector, etc) which led to the surplus. He also reinstated estate tax, and raised taxes on the top 10% of earnings in the country(hey, that sounds like someone elses plan).

The country's economy didn't experience growth of any note during his time... and he left the economy during a downturn.

I don't know how else to say that except, "Stagnating".

edit: Just wanted to add that one of Dubya's first acts was to remove Estate tax.

Clinton oversaw the longest period of continuous economic growth in the history of the peacetime United States. During his presidency the economy grew at a faster average rate than it did in the 12 years under Reagan and Bush senior.

Your own articles back me up, Neil. So, I wouldn't be calling anyone stupid yet.

The boon started before he took office, and it began its decline(which he didn't try to halt/restimulate/etc.) as he left office.

He made no efforts to handle it leaving his successor to deal with an economic downturn.

These are all from your articles, Neil.

My wording, however, was incorrect... and you did jump on that(which is fair enough, because I would have).

You've put this as a footnote when it was the whole point of my post. If you'd actually said what you meant I'd never have even mentioned it and wouldn't have called you stupid. I don't dispute that Clinton shouldn't take credit for everything, but you made it sound as if he fucked things up.

Anybody see McCains concedence(?) speech?

He was basically "giving props", that's how them African Americans say it yes?, to Obama and saying he was a decent bloke and deserved to win and he had to ask his followers to stop booing every word he said.

Yanks are truly bellends.

I bet most of them know the word concession though.

There's some really interesting behind the scenes stuff here

Highlights: Newsweek's Special Election Project | Newsweek Politics: Campaign 2008 | Newsweek.com

It's nice to see the pile onto Palin has started in earnest.

The debates unnerved both candidates. When he was preparing for them during the Democratic primaries, Obama was recorded saying, "I don't consider this to be a good format for me, which makes me more cautious. I often find myself trapped by the questions and thinking to myself, 'You know, this is a stupid question, but let me … answer it.' So when Brian Williams is asking me about what's a personal thing that you've done [that's green], and I say, you know, 'Well, I planted a bunch of trees.' And he says, 'I'm talking about personal.' What I'm thinking in my head is, 'Well, the truth is, Brian, we can't solve global warming because I f---ing changed light bulbs in my house. It's because of something collective'."

Ah right... Got it confused with Hillary's.

That's good because health care in the states is fucking ridiculous. I think mine was like $300 or so a month... and I was a healthy teenager.

Just been going through some paperwork with my new job. Healthcare insurance for our family of four is $18,000. Or, to put it another way, $1500 per month. I was astonished to find that out. My employer pays it, and so in that regard I'm lucky, but how on earth can that be right?! I would imagine many people will be priced out of health care, and that is all kinds of wrong.

Hopefully Obama can reform healthcare. If he can find a way to keep what's good (quality care and choice) and help with what's bad (too expensive, pricing many people out of the system) then he will do well. It is much needed.

I love the way they see the NHS as a 'socialist' idea.

Aye. I had an interesting conversation with someone yesterday about the idea of 'socialised medicine' (their phrase). I suggested that America already has a 'socialised military' (my phrase), and since they seem to think it is more than fine to all join forces and pay for defence, then why not healthcare?

As a kid, I was always confused about America and their health care and now their socialist stance. I've always thought that if we had to pay for healthcare, it'd be like paying the police to come round to your house or investigate a crime, or the fire brigade to put out a fire. Does not compute.

Very good G!

Unless they were the kind of person who keeps a gun to protect themselves from the government of course....

You certainly picked an interesting time to move over there, hope it's going well.

I was 100 percent correct through out this election, therefore I am the best political guy on this forum. fact.

RON PAUL 08

Also I don't get how anyone can say Clinton was bad for the economy when he finished his service with a damn budget surplus.

Hardcore, you know the score. ;)

Seriously the best day, night, and party of my life. We took over the streets. It was pandemonium of the best kind. I will never be able to explain the sheer joy and, dare I say it, the sense of hope that was in the air last night. It was unbelievable.
