Transfer Window to Close BEFORE Start of Season

Pretty stupid move by 80% of the league to spite the 20%, because they don't need transfers to fund them year-to-year in the same way they have historically with the TV deal.  However the foreign and football league sides these clubs buy from will all be able to take their time in negotiations knowing that the buyers have a deadline. The brinkmanship will bite these idiots on the arse, and in the wallet.

I am also interested to see how city and watford manage this with their overseas arrangements. Can city buy players post-deadline and loan them to girona? Ditto, Chelsea and vitesse. What about Udinese buying players late to then loan on in Jan?

This is where the Premier League and the FA could use the expertise of somebody like David Gill. He might be tainted by his association with the Mancs, but he carries a lot of influence in the corridors of power within the likes of UEFA and the European Club Association. Because of this, he can 'sell' the idea to implement things Europe-wide in a way that Premier League club chairmen and the Premier League itself would probably never be able to do.

On the subject of release clauses, I would ideally do away with them altogether, but if they are to remain then they should be restricted to movement within the duration of whatever transfer window applies to the selling club. If the window is harmonised across Europe, then there is no unfair advantage for anybody.

Well I predict this decision will be overturned by the PL clubs within 5 years. The summer window will be about 6 weeks long from beginning of July to the end of the first week in August.

Clubs wont get many deals done and they'll find European clubs will just stall the PL clubs in the knowledge they cant buy after 6 weeks. They'll then likely try and plunder the PL for purchases themselves. (The BBC article clearly says clubs can still sell upto the 'normal' window closure. Obviously the buying clubs cant be PL clubs so EFL or European clubs.)

Although they say the window will still be 12 weeks long, that gash because hardly any non PL clubs will be looking to sign off deals before 1 July when their windows open.

Absolutely ludicrous decision by the clubs and a bit of a knee jerk by Jurgen to go along with it. It wouldnt have stopped barcelona's attempt to buy coutinho either.

Stupidest idea I've seen this year.

It's bad enough now where transfer windows close on different days and you are on tenterhooks for 24 hours hoping that Madrid or Barcelona don't swoop for one of your players who you won't be able to replace until January..

It just hands another advantage to the continental clubs, as if they didn't have enough advantages already.

The clubs need to just get smart with it and just put wording in the contracts that any release clauses are only active in the English transfer window.

For all future contracts, yes, but I bet there's a lot more clauses in contracts than we realise currently amongst the top 5/6 clubs. Then you'd have to factor in an "enough time to sign a replacement" clause, which could leave a window of a couple of weeks. Players signing those future clauses would expect a lower asking price because of the limited timeframe.

There is another option.

Just start the league first week of September and scrap the league cup. Even move the FA cup mid week after the 3rd round.

Be interesting what the premier league thinks it going to do prior to the 2022 WC with the season starting even earlier.

What do we do for 3,5 months! Hands get tired too..

The sensible thing would be to allow teams to still buy from non-Prem teams after this date, I feel like the main issue is the big teams poaching players from weaker teams after the season has started, this would still prevent that.

Whilst its not great for us (although we voted for it), I think it evens things up a bit with the weaker teams and will be good for the league

According to BBC both Manchester clubs voted against it

Its stupid unless the Europeans adopt the same rules. There will still be weeks of uncertainty for our clubs after our window closes while Continentals look to plunder the PL. On this occasion the Mancs were probably right to vote against a unilateral change ,

If the PL clubs are allowed to sell after the PL window closes the only vulnerability will be clubs with release clause players targeted by the likes of PSG, RM, Barca etc.

If there is no release clause the PL clubs now have a stronger reason to refuse the deal or demand a higher premium for a player targeted after the PL window closes. Newer contracts will no doubt have release clauses tied to the PL deadline.

I think it will be a good decision in the long run.

This.

You can't have a release clause player if the rest of the leagues don't follow the same rule. The group stages of the champions league will be drawn, imagine having a club in your group who then take your star player through the release clause and you can do fuck all about it or replace the player.

Hasn't this been addressed, though; no outgoings after the window closes? Maybe I read it wrong.
