Was having a chat with my dad about Wood"s Pier Head photos and he was telling me about a well-known character who used to hang out there, called Sandy Bunloaf.

A bit of digging on Google and Twitter came up with an Echo obituary of sorts. His real name was Alexander 'Sandy' Bromilow, and he sounds quite the character.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows why he had the nickname Bunloaf?

I remember sandy well,he used to sit on the counter of the newsagents at the shop in the pier head bus station helping sell the echo newspaper. I used to get the 78 bus home from first job and the stop was opposite the shop. There was also a doughnut shop next door which were fantastic.

Got a bit choked up reading that. Proper legend Sandy. I remember my father in law saying the nickname came from the big boot he had to wear because of his polio

We used to get the bus into the pier head to bunk the ferry. To this day I have no reason why. Something to do I suppose. You would see Sandy shouting at the cheeky kids giving him cheek telling them he was gonna knock fuck out of their old fellas. Sometimes he'd chase them dragging his big bunloaf with him.

I used to go to the stadium to watch the regional ABA's. He would be there at the front lording it up. One time they got him up into the ring and introduced him. The whole place was chanting his name as he was shadow boxing. It was hilarious. Thanks for posting that.

You don't get characters like that any more. People are becoming more generic. In a few generations everyone will just be a cunt.
