Yeah that's the 1 shame  - that they couldn't play more together, who knows what would've turned out then. Injuries have killed us in every single season we didn't win the Prem/CL.

This sums up, in one sentence, our story in recent seasons.

While injuries are part and parcel of any season, we, for whatever reasons, seem to have had more than our fair share happen to key players, and then not having sufficient quality back up meant we couldn’t maintain enough of a challenge when it mattered.

Oh, and the little matter of 115 FC as well.

and what a shock to see Paul tierney at the end of it.

What game was it Klopp pulled his hammy after remonstrating with the 4th official, it wasn't this was it? Although I'm sure Tierney was the ref that day and it was he who was the 1 that booked him.

It was the one the end of last season, Tierney was the ref. It was the spurs home game I think, when we scored the last minute winner.

Absolute top class player, we would have won the final against Madrid if he had played instead of Konate and we would have won the league this season if he had not been injured.

We should have given him a one year extension.

No we shouldn't.

He's had a long list of injuries and now a serious ACL job - he'll be 33 by time next season starts.

He'll never be at the level we need again after such an injury on top of everything else and at his age.

Massive shame but letting him go is the right thing.

One of our top 3 free transfer signings for sure. An outstanding defender in his own right, and the best defensive partner for Virg. And genuinely funny without trying to be. Such a shame about the injuries. Thanks for the memories Big Bird, and all the best for the future.

It's the right thing if we replace him. If the replacement is quansah, we'd have been better keeping him.

When he got the last injury, Klopp came out and said that the club would look after him with a new deal. Couple of weeks later and klopps handing his notice in.

After reading that the club overruled him with new deals for Firmino & Milner last summer, im

all in on Matipgate being the straw that broke his back.

His level as a defender was incredible. His ability to carry the ball through the lines was crucial for most of klopp's time. But the injuries were always the issue. I'm sure had he been able to stay fit, his ability would have been as well regarded across the game as it was with our own fans. It's such a shame, he was still in great form last season and no doubt his injury cost us over that 2nd half of the season.

Virgil's best defensive partner at club so far. Classy, elegant but extremely injury prone (this could be attributed to a few other FSG era signings too.) Sorry to see him retire but typical of him to do it quietly and efficiently. Maybe a very good physio of the future?

Fixed.
