Why in FUCK don't we sign a proper DM?

A defensive midfielder isn't just about winning the ball or running around, it's about holding the shape of the team together. Hamann was pretty languid, he was no young Roy Keane, but he kept the play ticking over and closed down the angles so sides couldn't cut right through us. You don't need to be a world class player to do that, you just need the right set of skills and a defender's positional sense, the mancs aren't the same side without Carrick and he's not got even a tenth of Didi's ability.

I absolutely 100% aggree with this.

You don't have to look to Old T and Carrick btw, just look a few years back and you'd find a man called Momo Sissoko in our own midfield.

Momo’s skills as a footballer was a joke, sunday league quality if I'm generous. His unability to pass the ball was almost laughingly bad. But noone in the world was better at reading the defensive part of the game, cutting off angles , making tackles etc. He was phenomenal

Rodgers thinks he's too special to play with a DM. "It's easy to just defend". Even the key to Barcelona working in midfield is Busquets. If Rodgers thinks we'll get anywhere with just two runners in the middle of the park in Henderson and Milner then he's clueless. That's not how you defend. It's positional sense and game intelligence.

If you offered Rodgers Hamann in his prime he wouldn't want him.

What I am trying to say is, with this manager in place we are not going to play 442 with a holding midfielder and a big man up top. If that was going to be the style then we should have stuck with Kenny.

I'm not saying one system is better than the other but you will not get a hybrid of the two.

BR game is all about quick pressing high tempo movement. A sitting DM does not fit into that style. OK Barca can do it, it helps having 9 or 10 of the worlds best players at your disposal we do not have that luxury.

So Sergio Busquets wouldn't improve our midfield? If you swapped Busquets for Joe Allen or Milner then Barca would be hugely weakened even with the other boss 9 players.

Who said we had to play 4-4-2 and use a big man up front in order to play a holding mid? Mourinho with his style of football uses a DM in Matic and Barca with theirs use one as well. Both hugely important players for them.

You can play quick pressing high tempo even with a DM. It just allows the other 5 in midfield and attack - and your two full backs - more freedom and leaves them less exposed.

If all you want is someone to play like Momo Lucas can do that no bother. That is all he can do mind but he will do it all day long.

We may need to change our keeper to one who specialises in saving free kicks on the edge of the box but in our situation that is what we get.

And that’s why the importance of the DM is so hard to catch for the eye. It’s the opposite of spectacular, it’s just dull moving from side to side, cutting off angles, denying space, closing gaps.

If you’re good at it you’ll detect and deal with any possible danger before it happens, and because nothing happens nobody ‘s noticing. Because you did your job, there’s nothing to see. Kind of the opposite of Suarez sniffing out dangerous situations before they happen.

Lucas before his injuries would be fine. Like Momo after his though he's not the same player and doesn't have the mobility or fitness levels.

I think that's also why Rodgers doesn't want a DM. He doesn't really understand that aspect of football. Rodgers is about possession, or blitzing teams in attack and what to do when you have the ball. Without the ball he's clueless as a coach. All he knows is he wants 'pressing' but his teams here have only even done that sporadically over three years. That's why we need a seasoned coach who understands that side of the game and can coach it because without that then in big games and in Europe especially we're not going to have a clue.

I know they won the league but seriously who wants to play the same style of football as Mourinho. Fuck that I'd pack it in totally.

Houllier or Rafa would go away from home in Europe and kill a game stone dead with very defensive tactics, but they'd usually get their clean sheet wherever they went. Same with our old teams who won European Cups.

I'd take that over not being able to hold out for a win in Ludogorets or the performances we put in against Basle or Besiktas.

The cornerstone of our greatest ever triumph in Istanbul was bringing on a DM at half time. We got stuffed in the first half because we didn't have one.

We are not going to sign a Busquets, Fernandinho,Khedira Matic though are we so why discuss it. Any of those would improve us if we played them at left back but it does not matter.

What about the Carvalho kid at Sporting ?

Perhaps some sort of Markovic part-ex might interest ? He'd certainly fit FSG's moneyball equation...

Yes he doesn't understand the role of a dm because he's more interested in possession.

Which isn't at all one of the key functions of a dm.

It's my worry about BR too, but I’m prepared to give him the chance to rectify his earlier mistakes. When it comes to the attacking part of the game he’s not clueless. BR’s what we’ve got for next season anyway, so we might as well back him.

Maybe we should send him a copy of a CL final a couple of years back and show him what the introduction of a DM could do to a team, even improving the attack.

When people were mentioning Carvalho I was thinking of the CB that played for Chelsea ages ago and thought they had lost the plot.

Seriously mate I know fuck all about any of these players mentioned I watch little if any foreign footy. Years ago I would watch anything, Serbia under 21's in a friendly. These days I can barely sit through one of our matches.

The principals of the game have not changed though despite all the new talk.

Remember seeing Souness and Kenny talking about this and what they were told to do before a match tactics wise. Next to nothing. Basically you are better than them pass and move and win.

A pretty good definition of defense in football would be to say it’s the part of the game when you’re not in possession of the ball. Maybe your're right BR doesn't care.

The role of a dm is to recover possession of the ball before it reaches the defence and transition the team from defence back to attack as well as providing the link between defence and the midfield to shorten the field and make possession easier to maintain.

The positions sole purpose is based on the ability to recover or retain possession which makes his comment so monumentally fucking stupid.

But Rodgers aim is to not let the opposition have the ball at all. Has he not said that in the past, possession, death by football. He would rather have a player in midfield able to maintain possession knock it around so everyone can have a bit of a rest then go again. He will not sacrifice one of those for another defender. Was Joe Allen not his 1st signing.

None of that nullifies the job of a dm.

By seasoned coach I meant Pascoe's replacement. Rodgers needs someone who can help him with that side of the game and tactically.

Recover possession being key. Yes they need to be able to pass a football but they don't need to be Xavi. Win the ball, make a simple pass. Makelele made a career out of it and Real certainly missed him when he left. We don't necessarily need an out and out water carrier but certainly someone who's good at recovering possession frequently and tactically very switched on without the ball with good positional sense. The nearest we have to that is Lucas.
