History should be amazing memories for those lucky enough to be there, not something to be used to claim to be better than sides that continue to finish above us year after year.   Here & now is all that matters to footballers, they don't give a fuck if the trophy room is busting with dusty trophies, they care about money and what they can win.

don't slate our history then use arsenal as a yardstick !!!!    you don't get a medal for finishing 4th every season and being knocked out at the first knockout stage of champions league every season

I've never seen Luis give anything less than 100% on a football pitch as he's basically an animal desperate to win. He can teach many other footballers a lesson in playing for the full 90+ minutes and never giving up, he's that committed on the pitch. I suspect he's the same in training, on the beach, in the park, he clearly just wants to play football and win.  I find this a pretty strange comment to make by the manager, kind of unnecessary because it's so obvious, but I suppose he's just trying to make a point to Luis after the summer shenanigans. Whatever, it's irrelevant as Luis will be back to being his beastly self when he next pulls on the shirt and be back to being public enemy number 1 again. Yay!

Of course, this'll irk plenty of people, but I'll take issue with 'rightful place'.

 

No club has a rightful place.

 

Liverpool climbed their way to the very top and slipped down from the pinnacle (as every other club before and after). They didn't slip too far in the grand scheme. They COULD slip a lot further, or they could climb back yet again and be number one again... all that remains to be seen.

 

But every club has a right to make that climb. No matter how humble their current status.

 

The world of football has changed a fair bit since Liverpool's true glory years, and arguably it's become far more of a closed shop than it ever was, and the financial rewards have become so skewed that it's self serving amongst the very elite... but still, the fact remains... ALL clubs have a right to make the climb Liverpool did. Not many (if any) will succeed.

 

But there's no rightful place with Liverpool's name on it. There IS a history that can never be taken away, but that's another thing entirely.

Regarding Luis Suarez / Liverpool's stature vs Arsenal (or any other club)...

 

There's almost certainly a kudos in playing for Liverpool that Arsenal don't have. Liverpool DO have their name on big ears 5 times. When Suarez ends his career... regardless of what he personally won, there's still a lot of stock in having played for one of the European greats (Liverpool). Arsenal do not have that (yet).

 

But he must surely balance that with probability of winning something and being in champions league.

 

The odds of winning something at Arsenal are (arguably) LESS than at Liverpool. Liverpool have consistently won things, even though they've been considered a lesser team (in terms of average league finish) for many years.

 

The odds of being in CL favour Arsenal, but is being in CL the end game? I don't think so. I think being in CL is a shop window for getting to a European elite club. Therefore, any move to Arsenal would be just a stepping stone to his final destination.

 

I honestly don't think Luis Suarez would see moving to Arsenal as an 'upgrade' - it would only be a more convenient route to getting to Real Madrid, or another top European club.

 

In my opinion though, by moving to an intermediate club, he'd end up having to spend at LEAST 18 months at another club, and risk Real Madrid losing interest anyway. So it makes far more sense to stay put at Liverpool, put in another stellar performance this season, then finally make the move.next summer (if the opportunity is still there).

 

Of course, by next year, the position at Liverpool might have improved significantly, in which case, great. If not, he's not lost much.
