Any chance of this not turning into a 'fanboy' thread? I support Liverpool and I vote the Labour party, I play computer games! Notice the fundamental differences there?

I dont wear a Sony shirt with I 8 Microsoft and I dont wear a Sony rosette. Sad the way these threads always turn into a versus thread.

Would this be the same "fanboy" who has got a 360, a Wii and a PS3?

Oh right, I thought you had to be online for it to get all buggered up (technical term). Well it's a 60gb original so it's probably screwed. I'm not arsed about losing trophies, I just want to be able to use it.

Bit of a fuck-up by Sony.

You cant sign into PSN mate and it doesnt even matter if you're not bothered about trophies (they dont interest me either) the game will just crash when it is gonna give out an achievement trophy.

Digital Spy is probably the forum to keep an eye on at the moment, seem to be a bit clued up on there.

Ive got the older Playstation but my connection has been fine. Bought mine just before the slim ones hit the market. Im guessing its the older fat models.

There were reports of some old PS3 fat systems that were not affected, in work now, so can't get to the thread I seen this in on the Playstation forums.

It's absolutely ridiculous having a Playstation3 and not being able to play it offline.

I've read about people that have re-formatted their ps3's too, Sony should have sent out e-mails as soon as they became aware of this.

I know loads who have a ps3 and don't use it online so people with no internet access will not have a clue what's wrong.

Yeah, mine is suffering.

And it's not fat it's just big-boned.

Sorry... From what I've read regarding the problem being experienced by the big boned PS3's, it's not just the trophies that are affected. Some users have said that they have experienced data corruption with themes and save game data.

Whatever this problem is, it has them stumped, and I don't foresee a quick fix.

Everything seems fine except I can't sign in. I'll live as long as they sort it out quickly.

I agree, Odris. I think it will probably sort itself out at 00.00. Doesn't bode well otherwise.

I bet Sony are hoping that once midnight comes it will fix itself, if it doesn't they are fucked and there might be a system recall.

I don't see how it will just fix itself, if it is a date problem, PS3 internal clock/calendar thinking it's 29/02/2010, rolling over midnight will just make the system think it's 01/03/2010, which will still mean that the clock sync will not be correct.

Product recall would be an absolute nightmare, just think of how many original big boned PS3 systems there are globally.

Maybe Microsoft planted it.

This is my thinking too. The release of Heavy Rain scared the shit out of them.

I bet the engineers at Sony haven't tried rebooting the damn thing yet, as everyone knows, switching something off and back on again normally fixes any problem.

If it is the leap year thing then Sony need a good telling off, I for one would be writing a very strong letter with big words.

If it is the leap year thing then Sony need a good telling off, I for one would be writing a very strong letter with big words.

There were no problems 2 years ago when it was a leap year, so unless it's something that has been put in place by a patch between then and now that has caused this, I do not know.

This is the official line from Sony.

As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3.

We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system.

Errors include:

* The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000.

* When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)".

* When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game."

* When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)"

* Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date.

We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data.

As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

For the latest status on this situation please check either the PlayStation blog (blog.us.playstation.com) or PlayStation.com.

I see your point, however all of these machines may have been originally programmed to think 2008 and 2010 are leap years. So it wouldn't necessarily be something that has occurred since 2008, and in any event it is affecting all of the machines, not just those hooked up to the network.

This is true, and if the proggy who put the 2 year leap year period in place still works for Sony, he should be publicly humiliated, say by throwing old rotten fruit and veg at him while he walks through his local town with his pants around his ankles.

When you search for the error on Google, the below YouTube video appears in the search results. I can't watch the video in work.... But perhaps someone could have a watch and explain what the video is about?

You'd think if it was patchable it would have happened by now, no? They said 24 hours, unless they're doing some tests on the patch. I'm entering wild speculation and panic mode, and planning for life with a slim PS3.
