From stalking to death threats: Teenage girls take their fandom to a sinister new level in the internet age

In the 90s Take That’s split drove hundreds of teenage girls into therapy.

Now the world’s biggest *boyband One Direction has given rise to a new generation of super-fans. And their obsessive *behaviour in this internet age takes fandom to a sinister new level.

From stalking the boys in their home towns to sending their girlfriends death threats on *Twitter, “Directioners” will stop at nothing to get to their idols.

“When Harry was with Taylor Swift I was giving her death threats and I think she actually blocked me off Twitter – that’s how bad it was,” admits Sandra, 14. “If I actually saw her now I think I’d rugby tackle her.

“I’d stamp on her, I’d rip all her hair out, I’d squeeze her eyeballs, I’d step on her eyeballs."

This week men’s magazine GQ published a blog documenting the crazed responses to its

latest issue featuring an interview with the boys.

Directioners tweeted threats to bomb the magazine’s headquarters as well as murder the staff, castrate the editor and – bizarrely – “pull their eyes out with a spork”... just because they didn’t like some of the taglines on the front cover.

Pip, 20, from Cheshire had girls threatening to hunt her down and kill her after she tweeted a piece of gossip about one of the boys.

She has gone under the needle in homage to her favourite 1D boy Louis, and has a teacup *tattoo like his on her wrist.

Natasha, 18, even had braces fitted, even though she didn’t need them. “I wanted to get them to be the same as Niall. I didn’t tell the orthodontist why I wanted them. I didn’t want them to think I’m crazy.”

Eventually her dentist said she could have braces... but in order to make space, he would have to pull out four teeth first.

“I did actually wonder if I was being a bit crazy at that point,” says Natasha. “But it was *definitely worth it.”

Fans have constant contact with their idols thanks to social media sites.

“We can find out literally *anything, their blood types, their birth certificates,” says Pip. “If you’ve got a drug problem and people feed you drugs, you’re constantly getting a bigger *addiction. That’s what it's like with One Direction. All you need to do is to log on to Twitter and it’s like feeding your addiction.”

Since their formation on The X Factor three years ago the band have sold 10million records worldwide. Each has around 10million followers, all *competing for their attention.

Pip says: “When I tweet them I try and be as funny as I can so they’ll follow me. Zayn *retweeted me once which was amazing, I cried for about an hour.”

Of course, the Holy Grail for all 1D fans is to meet the boys in person and fans will go to extreme lengths to achieve this.

For her 18th birthday Becky, a shop assistant from *Manchester, spent the night in the same hotel as the band. She and her friends sat up all night drinking in the reception area in the hope of catching a glimpse of them.

After hours of waiting, Becky finally managed to corner them for a few minutes. It’s a moment she will treasure for ever.

She already has the band’s song lyrics tattooed on her arm and says she isn’t interested in getting a boyfriend. “I don’t really like to speak to other boys,” she says.

“I like focusing on One *Direction. Most of my friends that are 1D fans are single. It’s weird, we’re all just single.” Her dedication, she says, is what elevates her above other fans.

“I’ve been to Sheffield, I went to see them in Birmingham. I’ve been to Doncaster, Harry’s house, Louis’ house. Louis’ *family don’t mind, but Harry’s family, I think they don’t like it.

“People say I’m a stalker and the lads probably don’t like it but I don’t care.”

She’s not the only one. Schoolgirl Sandra spent the day in Harry’s hometown of Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, to feel “closer” to her favourite 1D member.

But she has not yet managed to meet the heart-throb.

“If I met him I’d have a heart attack and die,” she says. A-level student Natasha, from North London, says: “Sometimes friends tease me and say I’m never going to marry Zayn which makes me angry because you just never know.”

And although she’s never even been to one of the band’s *concerts, she says: “Being a fan is from the heart. They’re like my *identity, I’m just gonna love them for ever.”

Actually thought I saw her in town last night when out.

If so she now has short purple hair, so won’t be difficult to spot her again.

You don’t really believe she was in the same place as you by chance....

Well apparently, and I quote weirdo I "look just like him before the new album came out"

The other day me and the other half did some investigating and yeah...I admit it, I do kinda look like him here. Exact same haircut on this here pic.

I'm so ashamed of my face right now
