It has to be one of the last two Blackadders really. Melchett is a comedy giant of a creation but as Blackadder holds everything together he has to be the man.

I went for the same as KOP and plumped for Blackadder goes forth and I'd have Blackadder III a very close second. Then you can start to think about Melchett in third.

Weird. I'd put Blackadder II way above III.

'See the little Goblin, see his little feet, and his little nosey-wose, isn't the Goblin sweet'.

Its hard to pick a winner. I loved the first series, the third was excellent, but each time I watch series 2 I'm swayed all over again. Individual episodes in series 2 are classics, Beer and Money particularly, Queenie, Nursey and Melchett were all superb as support characters. I think that was also Baldricks finest moment.

He was playful yet cynical in series 2, Percy was a real tit "Id love to see the Spaniard that could get past me"..."Go to Spain there are millions of them".

In series 3 he continues to grow as a man and grow increasingly cynical, again some episodes are cracking, Miranda Richardson steals the show as the daughter of the impoverished industrialist moonlighting as the highwayman, and her dad is fucking quality "I'd sooner place my john Thomas in the hands of lunatic with a pair of scissors than give my daughter to an unwoooorthy man".

Queenie makes series 2, but overall, my fave occasional character is Peter Cook as the old King in series 1.

Melchett for me, pure comic genius. "I don't care if he's been rogering the duke of York with a prize winning leak, he killed Speckled Jim!"

Your old man reminds me a bit of Melchett Tom :D

:D I'll let him know mate, would that make you Captain Darling?

Certainly not! That would be Pete's job. I keep them both in line and concentrating on the job in hand like.....

Nah. III is cleverer and he has Lord Percy to use as his punchbag which gives him unlimited material.

Stuart, Stuart, Stuart. When will you learn that "cleverer" isn't the most important thing in the world, never mind in comedy?

Cleverer = funnier though Paul. Blackadder is better than most things because its gags were well crafted, i.e. 'clever'.

What's clever about slapstick? What's clever about toilet humour? What's clever about swearing? Nothing - but they're all fucking funny. "Clever" can sometimes be hilarious, but it can sometimes be right up its own arse, too. I'm just making the point that it's not everything.

Edmund: Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Darling: Security, Blackadder...

Edmund: Security?

Melchett: (coming out from behind the map) `Security' isn't a dirty word, Blackadder. `Crevice' is a dirty word, but `security' isn't.

Edmund: So, in the name of security, sir, everyone who enters the room has to have his bottom fondled by this drooling pervert.

Darling: Only doing my job, Blackadder...

Edmund: Oh, well, how lucky you are, then, that your job is also your hobby.

Melchett: Now there's another dirty word: `job'!

Edmund: Sir, is there something the matter?

Melchett: You're damn right there is something the matter. (heads for desk) Something sinister and something grotesque. And what's worse is that it's going on right here under my very nose. (sits behind desk)

Edmund: (protesting) Sir, your moustache is lovely...

Darling: What the General means, Blackadder, is: There's a leak.

Melchett: Now leak is a positively disgusting word.

I've got to go with General Melchett. The best character by a mile.

Melchett: If you do this for me Blackadder I'll let you marry my sister.

Darling: Are you sure that's wise sir?

Melchett: Of course it is! You should hear the noise she makes when she eats a boiled egg!

And another classic:

Blackadder: I'm afraid there's something wrong with your fiancee.

Melchett: Good God, she's not Welsh is she?

Bask in the beauty of that poll. And yet I still have a bad reputation with everyone apart from Red Nick. Which, lets face it, isn't the best character reference.

You are a winner. A Poll Ninja.

You are destined to wander as a through internet fora, instructing the young and uninitiated in the Way of the Poll, giving away it's dark secrets. Much to the confusion of others, as soon as you arrive you are gone, like the legendary Shrewsbury Unicorn. Your name will be perpetually etched in poll folklore, for on any forum, on any subject, in any language, if there is a monumental mistake they shall let forth a cry of "Fuck it; I've made another RiS-up".

Well done, sir.

I still can't believe Nursie didn't get any votes.

250px-Blackadder_2_nursie.jpg

Melchett: It appears he wishes to marry a girl called Bob.

Queenie: It is a very odd name for a girl, isn't it? Girls are normally called Elizabeth or Mary.

Nursie: And Donald...

Queenie: Mouth is open Nursie, should be shut.

Nursie: Thing is true, sweet one. I had three sisters and they were called Donald, Eric and Basil.

Queenie: Then why is your name Nursie?

Nursie: That ain't my real name.

Queenie: Isn't it?

Nursie: No.

Queenie: No, what is your real name then?

Nursie: Bernard.

Queenie: Suits you, actually.

    • Stream all the way. Fucking greedy cunts.
    • It’s way past ridiculous with United and the penalties. Chelsea not getting one in the Maguire situation is just a complete joke.
    • Not many CBs are going to look great playing such a high line on our right side with Trent and  Salah in front of them. We know the risks and play the system according but the CB is going to be a made a fool of quite regularly.
    • Saturday Oct 17:   Everton 2 L 2. I’m too angry to say anything really coherent about this. It will all be in the match report so I’m not going to even comment on the controversial issues from this. If I start I doubt I’ll be able to stop so instead I’m just going to focus on the football side of it. We played well. It was the perfect response to what happened at Villa as you could see the determination the lads had to immediately stamp their authority on this one.    From the first whistle they were right at Everton. The two early fouls by Virg showed how pissed off he was with the Villa result and he set the tone as we were on the front foot. It looked like we would blow them away but then you know what happened and the momentum was taken away from us. The reaction was good though and we bossed the first half.   The second half was scrappy to begin with but eventually we took control and we were by far the better team. We should be better as we’re the Champions and they’re Everton, but they went into this in the best shape they’ve been in for decades. And we were coming off that Villa game. Then we lost our most important player (we were already without Alisson) but despite all this we’ve completely schooled them.    Forget the result, that doesn’t tell the story. This was dominance. Everton know they’re still not even remotely close to being at our level. Maybe that’s why they act like thugs every time we play them?   I have always put that down to the crowd and the effect that 30,000 baying bitter bastards has on players, but it turns out that’s got fuck all to do with it. It’s not the fans that make them act like that, it’s the fucking badge. Dirty cunts.   Sunday Oct 18:   So he’s done for the season then. Grade 3 ACL tear, which basically means his whole knee needs re-attaching. We’re looking at probably 12 months until he’s back at full speed so this is an absolute fucking nightmare. I’m unspeakably angry about it all as the whole situation was a fucking disgrace, and I don’t just mean the tackle.    I’m probably in the minority here but I’m angrier about Oliver and Coote not punishing Pickford than I am at Pickford for actually doing it. I’m not defending him at all, but these things do occasionally happen as it’s always been part of the game. What should never happen is for a referee to see it and do nothing. That’s the thing that’s getting to me.    David Coote should no longer be in a job this morning, but fuck all will happen to him despite him being guilty of quite literally the worst bit of officiating I’ve ever seen. An on field ref not getting a decision right is one thing, but when you have access to replays and still get it as wrong as Coote did that’s negligence of the highest order. Sack the cunt.   Naturally there’s a lot of defeatism around after this. Our title prospects have taken a severe hit and it might be too much to overcome. I don’t think it’s as clear cut as a lot of people are making out though, mainly because everyone else is flawed. Look at Spurs today, 3-0 up and looking great. Looking like title contenders even. Then they conceded three to West Ham and drew. That’s what I’m saying. All the other top teams have their faults and it’s not going to take 99 points to win it this year.   Actually it wouldn’t have taken 99 last year. That’s what we got, but 82 would have been enough. Somewhere around that will do it this year too probably (I expect maybe 86/87ish might be enough) and we can get that even without Virgil. His injury means we aren’t going to run away with it again but it shouldn’t mean we can’t be right in the thick of it. We need to pray that Matip doesn’t break down again and that Alisson is back soon. If that happens and we can get to January still in the shake up, we can bring someone in and finish the season strongly.   Clean sheets are going to be hard to come by now (they were anyway) and we might see a lot more of those crazy 5-4 type games again, but we were a good side before Virgil and we’re still a good side now. We’re better now than we were before we signed him and although we’ll obviously miss him big time, we have enough strength in other areas of the pitch to keep the rig on the road.   I feel worse for Virgil himself than I do for our prospects this season, because I think we’ll be alright.     This is just a teaser, click here to view full article   Please note that the Week that Was is only available to website subscribers.
