The difference between signing him and loaning him, and activating a clause for a minimal increase a year later means that if he did nothing this season we could just not pursue the transfer at all instead of having to make the transfer work because we'd already bought him and loaned him hoping he'd adapt.

 

It's less risky because you commit absolutely nothing up front and aren't obligated to move for him, any pre-agreed price also gives you the security that if he absolutely tore it up in the first season you aren't paying 20/30/40 million more to try and secure him.

 

 

 

That might have made sense if we had actually brought in a midfielder in the summer as well as agreeing this deal.
