New Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said his players' confidence would be "smashed" after the worst possible start to his reign at Old Trafford.

 

United, who won six friendlies under Van Gaal in pre-season, began their Premier League campaign with a shock 2-1 home defeat by Swansea.

I get your point.  Law of diminishing returns is a bitch, but there's surely scope for humorous, feelgood reflection on United's season if it goes badly.

He changed formation 3 times and looked a bit desperate. It's like the players are so concerned with the formation they don't know what to do. The Herrera sub killed them off though and even with the 6 mins(!) added they never looked too likely to score. Any team relying on Fletcher as their engine will suffer.

This is Van Gaals last gig and I can't see the Glazers spending what it takes to get them back, even if they do now go out and splurge. But who will fancy it though? No CL and the desperation around the place is palpable. Whoever they get will be expensive too. It's not looking too good for anyone but the guy who owns the local aerodrome.
