Magic Moments: "Beating Burnley (1962-63)" by Frank Dacey

It’s hard to remember now but Burnley were once a power in the land. They were League Champions in 1960 and came close to doing the double in 1962. So when the Reds were drawn away to them in the FA Cup 4th Round it was widely regarded as one of the most difficult draws possible.

Burnley had already beaten us in the League at Anfield so even drawing the original tie at Turf Moor 1-1 was not a guarantee of progress.

The replay was much delayed due to the appalling winter but when it finally took place nearly 58,000 people were there to watch a close encounter. Burnley took the lead only for Ian St John to equalise on the stroke of half-time.

No further goals meant extra time being played and with a minute of that left a second replay was imminent, when St John was brought down by the Burnley keeper and a penalty given at the Kop end.

Up stepped Ronnie Moran and blasted Liverpool to a famous victory and one that convinced many Kopites that Liverpool’s name was finally on the FA cup.

An inspired Gordon Banks ensured that it wasn’t but that victory over a fine Burnley team was evidence that the Reds were more than capable of holding their own in the top flight.

Liverpool; Lawrence; Byrne, Yeats, Moran; Milne, Stevenson; Callaghan, Hunt, St John, Melia, Lewis

yes remember it well, full house, just got in before the gates closed, about 2 mins to go and it was 1-1 St John was on his way back up field when keeper Adam Blacklaws goal kick hit him in the back, he spun in a flash and was about to round the keeper when he was brought down, penalty, put away by Moran, to round off what had been a cracking game, one which neither side deserved to lose, but one we were glad to win.

Wasn't the Turf Moor tie the one where half the ground was full of travelling Liverpool fans which was unusual for back then? Pretty sure my dad told me about this.
