Underrated films

Zwarte Boek (Black Book) is good as well if you don't mind Dutch films. Carice van Houten is excellent in it.

I've never really understood people who will skip films because they have subtitles.

There are too many good things made around the World to miss out because of that.

Correct. I have seen so many good foreign films because I ignored the subtitles part and I now favour foreign films over English speaking ones.

Tend to be a lot more immersive too, you can't look away at all or you'll miss what's going on. With the English ones it's easy to get distracted and check your phone or stick the kettle on or whatever.

Since I started working for myself if I'm at home I tend to have something on in the background that I don't really have to pay attention to.

The flip side is that a lot of the time when I am trying to watch something I end up trying to do a bit of work.

A foreign film definitely does help with that and allow me to switch off from work stuff a lot easier.

There are just so many good ones out there. I also have a tendency towards liking more foreign stuff than English now, there are still decent English language films coming out but they certainly seem to be the minority right now.

I also much prefer someone speaking in their own language to something like Anthropoid where it took me about half an hour before I felt like I could understand because they spoke English with an accent instead of just hiring native actors and using sub titles.

I'm fully on board with this. There seems to a trend over the last few years where everyone seems to mumble there way through films instead of just speaking clearly. I thought I was going deaf as I just couldn't sit through a movie without having to rewind what was just said. I don't actively seek out foreign films but now I think about it, some of the best films I've seen have been foreign with subtitles - city of god, downfall & pans labyrinth from memory
