I initially thought he had to retake because of the stop in the run up. Then he did it again on the retake, should have been asked to take it again.

It's outrageous the way he gets away with it every time.

He had to retake it because of players in the box. Much as I hate the smug plastic twat there is actually nothing illegal in his penalty runs.

I don't see the problem with it. Aldo was a master at it, and Hamann did it in the CL final. As long as a player only kicks the ball once, then I don't see the problem.

Goalkeepers are allowed to run along the line for christ sake!

while I'd rather not quote Graham Poll or link to the Daily Mail site here is his take on Ronaldo's pens, it seems there was a rule change and it is now ok:

Q: Following Cristiano Ronaldo stopping in his run-up before scoring a penalty for Manchester United against Derby last weekend, Tim Brownsdon from Frinton asks: Is it now permissible for a player to pause or shimmy in his run-up to taking a penalty?

A: I remember John Aldridge being told not to do it when he was Liverpool's penalty-taker in the late 1980s.

Since a change in Law which allows the goalkeeper to move along his goal line, referees have been instructed to allow a variety of run-ups so long as the kicker is deemed not to be acting in an unsporting manner.

So it could possibly be deemed unsporting behaviour. Yet another law that is open to the referee's opinion and possibly dependant on the teams/players involed!

If he wasn't "telling off" Ronaldo then I wonder why the ref had such a long word with him after the first take?

From FIFA law 14:

• the player taking the penalty kicks the ball forward

• he does not play the ball a second time until it has touched

another player

• the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward

Those are the only rules applying to the penalty taker before the ball is played.
