right. one or two of the techies on here were kind enough to help me with some computer issues a while ago, and like a leech that doesn't know when to stop sucking, here I am again to ask for help.

strangely enough, it's actually a problem that only TLW can solve, for reasons that will become clear over the next few sentences. basically, I've got some weird virus or something that intermittently blocks my internet use. sometimes it's ok, sometimes it's not, and sometimes it's ok and then it's not and then it's ok and then it's not. when it spazzes out, I just get this message that there's a 'problem loading page...firefox can't find the server'. at which point I disconnect, then reconnect, and it works for a bit. then it stops again.

and the weird thing is, throughout all this, whenever I can't get any other site at all, guess which is the only site I can look at? yes! The Liverpool Way.

SO, I would normally post this on one of the geek forums & ask them nicely to sort me out (which I've discovered works quite well normally), but being as how I can't even get onto those sites, I thought I'd try asking people on here.

I've run AVG, spybot & trend micro anti-spyware & all they find is tracking cookies.

any helpful suggestions will be mucho appreciated. cheers me dears.

Im sorry for your problems mate, but this post and the title of the thread made me laugh.

I cant help you as basically Im shite when it comes to computers, I turn the bastard on, I navigate my way around and thats it.

Somebody will come through for you, Ive no doubt about that.....good luck with it.

Jari, were you the guy I told to buy an external hard disk, back everything up onto it, then wipe your PC's hard disk and reinstall windows? Cos that's your best bet.

Either that, or your internet connection is fucked. Get someone you know with a laptop to come over and test it on their comp.

Trend Micro are a very good antivirus / antispyware company. The reason that's being reviewed is probably because it's a competitor, as I get the trend micro antispyware flagging AVG antivirus as spyware, which is balls.

Who is your ISP? Is it Tiscali? If so, random apparent disconnects, DNS errors and general wankiness is normal service for them.

Seriously.

When you say you can always get TLW, have you got it in favourites as the actual site name, or just the IP addy?

Can you do any connection diagnostics whilst you've been knocked offline?

Example one, every geek loves a traceroute. Go to Start/Run, type in CMD to go to command line.

Then, firstly try a trace to http://www.google.com, for example.

tracert http://www.google.com

then try it to an IP addy. One for Google is 216.239.59.99

so tracert 216.239.59.99

One from here (old laptop ac-hoc wirelessly networked to another lappy on Plusnet at my tarts house) looks like this, for example.

Tracing route to gv-in-f99.google.com [216.239.59.99]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 1 ms 2 ms 2 ms HP.mshome.net [192.168.0.1]

2 24 ms 29 ms 29 ms lo0-plusnet.pte-ag2.plus.net [195.166.128.72]

3 24 ms 29 ms 29 ms ge0-0-0-504.pte-gw2.plus.net [84.92.4.90]

4 24 ms 29 ms 29 ms ge0-0-0-22.ptn-gw1.plus.net [212.159.4.1]

5 24 ms 29 ms 29 ms ge-4-1.metro2-londencyh00.London1.Level3.net [21

2.113.11.41]

6 24 ms 29 ms 29 ms 195.50.116.70

7 * 24 ms 29 ms 72.14.238.244

8 34 ms 39 ms 39 ms 66.249.95.107

9 34 ms 39 ms 39 ms 64.233.174.185

10 54 ms 39 ms 39 ms 216.239.49.114

11 44 ms 39 ms 39 ms gv-in-f99.google.com [216.239.59.99]

Trace complete.

If you can trace to IP addys, but not domain names it means DNS is screwed. There are ways around that, specifying DNS servers instead of auto-assigned is one way around it, but see if it is that first.

And so on.

Me too. Jari37 has quietly slipped back into the TLW ranks and it's a very welcome return to the fold (even if I do have to ignore his deliberate - and blatant - abandonment of capital letters).

Shit the wizard, the scary thing is I even understood a little bit of Uncle Meat's post

1. "Shit the wizard" - ace.

2. Bullshit did you understand anything Meat said apart from words like "and", "the" and - getting technical now - "laptop".

I would get shut of Yahoo Toolbar for a start.

What processes are running whilst the pc is on the internet - Ctrl/Alt/Delete and click on the processes tab.

Also what programs are running when the pc first starts - start/run/msconfig/startup.

You say Firefox dont work but does Internet Explorer.

Replying here as its too long for a PM. Also, I might have fucked up on the procedure to get to your settings as I've not had to deal with this kind of thing on a PC with a USB modem for donkeys..

Anyway...

No probs. It does sound like DNS is fucked, as before if you can connect via a numerical address, but not through a named addy, DNS is probably the culprit.

A bit of background. All websites/hosts/whatever have a numerical (IP) address. As you can imagine, numbers are a bitch to remember, so DNS (Domain Name Servers) was introduced to make life easier. All DNS does is translate an address name into an IP addy

Now, DNS needs to be set in connection settings. Usually it is auto-assigned, but if you've had some rogue software on your PC that has tried to change your connection settings, it may well have also tried to fuck with your default DNS entries.

Ok. Now, how to change the fuckers.

I assume you're using Windows XP here...

Go to Start, then Settings, then Network Connections.

This will open up another window, and in that window will be various icons (depending on your exact computer config) relating to dialup connections, LAN and all that malarkey.

The icon you're looking for should be quite obvious, it might even be named Demon, or at least in the smaller text next to it, it'll have something like "PPP ADSL adapter" or similar. Thats the one you want, seeing as it appears you are using a USB ADSL modem.

Ok, once you have found that icon, right-click upon it and then click "Properties" in the menu that pops up upon right-clicking.

Ok. Now (hopefully, trying to remember all this from scratch) another window will open up with a bunch of networking stuff upon it. you might have to click through the "tabs" to find the bit you need (usually comes up on the first tab).

The bit you need will have a box with one of the following entries in it.

"Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".

Ok, click upon that so it is highlighted (don't untick it, just so it highlights) and then click on the "Properties" button below it to the right.

When you do, yet another window will open up with some settings relating to DNS servers. Now, there is an option for "Obtain DNS automatically" or "Use following DNS addresses".

This is the bit you need to change. Now, usually auto-assigned does the trick, and it should be on that as default but if it has been changed, or if it is on default summat else might be knackering it up. So, what to do next is to "force" the DNS servers it uses so if nowt else you can rule that out as being a problem.

First, if it is not set to "Obtain automatically", change it to that. You'll have to disconnect and reconnect in order for the change to take effect, but try that first.

If that does not work, try the following.

Click on "use following DNS" and put these two numbers in. First in "Preferred", second in "Alternate". These two numbers are the addresses for Demons DNS servers.

158.152.1.58

158.152.1.43

Right, that'll do for now. Try the above and see how you get one. Soz for making it long-winded, just trying to make it as clear as poss.

Good luck!
